Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel had been stripped of its usual elegance. The velvet drapes were drawn tight, the crystal chandeliers dimmed to a amber glow, and armed guards stood every ten feet along the perimeter walls.

Tables were set in a wide circle around a central mahogany dining table. Sitting at those tables were the heads of New York’s most dangerous criminal syndicates: Don Carmine Moretti, an old, fat vulture with ruthless eyes; Matteo Falcone, a sharp, younger boss from Brooklyn; and several captains from the western boroughs.

The atmosphere was thick with cigar smoke, tension, and silent hostility.

When the double doors opened, conversation died instantly.

Adrien Valente walked in. He wore a flawless black tuxedo, his hair slicked back, looking every bit the king of the city. His left arm was tightly bandaged beneath his jacket, but his gait was smooth, imposing, and devoid of any weakness.

Beside him walked Hannah.

She looked breathtaking, though she felt utterly terrified. Adrien’s stylists had dressed her in a floor-length dark emerald silk gown that draped gracefully over her curves, modest yet regal. Her brown hair was pinned up in an elegant chignon, and around her neck sat a delicate diamond pendant—a personal gift from Adrien’s private vault.

In her arms, wrapped in an embroidered silk blanket, was Luca.

Whispers broke out instantly across the room.

"Who is the woman?" "Is that Isabella’s replacement already?" "I thought the baby was dead..."

Don Carmine Moretti smirked, puffing on his cigar as Adrien took his seat at the head of the main table. Hannah sat immediately to Adrien’s right, with Marco standing directly behind her chair like a iron wall.

"Adrien," Moretti sneered, his voice like grinding stones. "We were surprised by your invitation. We assumed you were still in mourning... or perhaps searching for the rats in your estate."

Adrien picked up his wine glass, swirling the dark red liquid slowly. "I don't search for rats, Carmine. I exterminate them. As of three o'clock this morning, the three men you paid to enter my home were fed to the crabs in Jamaica Bay."

A heavy silence fell over the room. Moretti’s smile faltered slightly, though he tried to maintain his composure.

"You bring a child to a diplomatic dinner, Valente?" Matteo Falcone asked, leaning forward. "And who is the lady? She doesn't look like a Valente."

"This is Hannah Brooks," Adrien said, his voice echoing clearly across the vast room. "She is the woman who saved my son’s life when every doctor in this city failed. She is Luca’s caregiver, his protector, and an honored member of my household."

Carmine Moretti scoffed loudly. "A baker from Queens! My sources tell me she's a broke widow who lost her own bastard child. You bring a milk-maid to sit with the bosses of New York?"

Adrien didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fist on the table.

He simply stood up.

The motion was so sudden, so fraught with violent intent, that six guards around the room reached for their jackets. Marco immediately drew his sidearm, pointing it directly at Moretti’s forehead.

"Speak of her with disrespect again, Carmine," Adrien said softly, "and I will cut your tongue out and feed it to you before you leave this room."

Moretti swallowed hard, his face turning pale. He raised his hands slowly. "Easy, Valente. We're all gentlemen here."

"No, we are not," Adrien replied, remaining standing. "We are men of business. And my business is peace—so long as my family is unmolested. But if any of you... any of your men... so much as look toward my estate, toward this woman, or toward my son... I will burn your territories to ash."

He turned to Hannah, his voice instantly dropping to a gentle whisper. "Hannah, give Luca to me."

Hannah, her heart pounding against her ribs, carefully lifted the baby and handed him to Adrien.

Adrien held his son high in one arm—a show of strength, a declaration that the heir to the Valente empire was alive, healthy, and thriving.

The infant looked around the brightly lit room, his dark hazel eyes curious. He didn't cry. He didn't shrink away from the harsh lights or the dangerous men staring at him. He looked out over the sea of mobsters with a calm, almost icy detachment that sent a shiver down the spines of the older bosses.

"Look at him," Matteo Falcone whispered to his captain. "He has his father's eyes."

Suddenly, Luca let out a loud, healthy coo, his little arms flailing in the air. He turned his head toward Hannah, reaching his tiny fingers out toward her green gown, letting out a sharp, impatient squeak that sounded suspiciously like a demand for food.

A few of the younger captains chuckled softly, breaking the icy tension.

Adrien smiled—a genuine, rare smile that transformed his harsh face into something strikingly handsome. He handed Luca back to Hannah, who immediately wrapped him in her coat and gently nursed him beneath a heavy silk shawl, ignoring the eyes of the underworld staring at her.

"The meeting is over," Adrien announced, buttoning his jacket. "You have seen my son. You know my stance. Good night, gentlemen."

As they walked out of the ballroom, flanked by heavy security, Hannah felt Adrien’s hand gently touch the small of her back—guiding her, protecting her, anchoring her.

"You were incredible," Adrien murmured as they stepped into the private elevator.

"I was terrified," Hannah admitted, leaning against the mirrored wall as Luca quietly drank. "Those men... they look at people like they're numbers on a ledger."

"They are," Adrien said grimly. "But you aren't. Not to me."

He stepped closer to her in the cramped space of the elevator. The air between them grew thick with a sudden, suffocating heat. Adrien reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His knuckles brushed against her warm cheek, and Hannah felt a shiver run down her spine that had nothing to do with fear.

"Adrien..." she whispered.

"I know," he said softly, his gray eyes searching her face with unbearable intensity. "It's too soon. It's dangerous. You belong to a normal world, Hannah. A world of flour, sugar, and quiet mornings."

May you like

"I don't think I can ever go back to that world," she confessed, looking down at the baby in her arms. "Not after holding him. Not after knowing you."

Adrien’s breath hitched. He leaned down, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to her forehead—a promise, a silent vow of protection that felt heavier than any law.
