Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Three months passed. Winter gave way to the crisp, fresh breezes of early spring, melting the snow off the Long Island cliffs.
In that time, the Valente estate changed.
The cold, sterile atmosphere of grief that had hung over the mansion slowly dissolved. The scent of fresh bread, vanilla, and lemon zest began to waft from the professional-grade kitchen, where Hannah spent her afternoons baking for the staff and guards. The men who had once looked like mindless killing machines now smiled when they saw her, eagerly accepting her warm brioche and cannoli.
Luca was growing rapidly. At four months old, he was a bright, laughing child who babbled constantly and refused to sleep unless Hannah read him stories from her old childhood books.
And Adrien... Adrien was changing most of all.
He spent less time at the harbor offices and more time in the estate nursery. He had learned how to change diapers (much to Marco’s absolute shock), how to warm milk, and how to rock Luca to sleep when Hannah was tired.
One evening, after Luca had finally fallen asleep in his crib, Hannah sat on the patio terrace watching the ocean waves crash against the rocks below. A thick cashmere blanket was wrapped around her shoulders against the spring chill.
A heavy coat was placed over her blanket, accompanied by the scent of sandalwood.
Adrien sat beside her on the stone bench, pouring two glasses of amber whiskey. He handed one to her.
"I don't usually drink whiskey," Hannah said with a small smile.
"It keeps the chill out," Adrien replied, clinking his glass against hers. "Besides, you've earned a drink. Dr. Bennett says Luca is in the top ninetieth percentile for health. He’s thriving, Hannah. Because of you."
Hannah took a small sip, feeling the liquid burn pleasantly down her throat. "He’s an easy baby to love, Adrien."
"Is he?" Adrien looked out at the ocean, his profile dark and sharp against the moonlit sky. "I was afraid... after Isabella died, I was afraid I wouldn't know how to love him. In my family, love is often used as a weapon. You love someone, and your enemies find out, and they take it from you."
"That’s a lonely way to live," Hannah whispered.
"It’s the only way I knew. Until you came through that door in Queens with a rolling pin in your hand, ready to fight off my entire security detail." He chuckled softly, a warm, deep sound. "You were so fierce."
Hannah looked down at her hands. "I had nothing left to lose that night. My baby was gone. My husband had abandoned me. My shop was failing. I thought my life was over."
Adrien reached out, wrapping his large, warm hand over hers. "Your life was just beginning, Hannah."
Their eyes met in the moonlight. The silence between them was no longer filled with the memory of dead spouses or dangerous enemies. It was filled with something brand new—a sweet, rising tension that had been building for months.
Adrien pulled her gently toward him. Hannah didn't pull away.
When his lips met hers, it wasn't violent or demanding. It was slow, deep, and filled with a profound reverent tenderness that made Hannah’s heart race. He kissed her as if she were fragile, as if she were the most precious thing he had ever acquired.
Hannah let her fingers slide up into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer, melting against his broad chest.
When he finally pulled back, his breathing was ragged, his thumb tracing her lower lip.
"I swore I wouldn't do that," he murmured, his voice husky. "I swore I wouldn't pull you deeper into my darkness."
"Maybe I don't mind the dark," Hannah whispered back, her cheeks burning. "Not if you're in it."
Before Adrien could answer, the security phone in his pocket chimed sharply—a priority alert.
He answered it immediately, his tone shifting back to business in a fraction of a second. "Valente."
He listened for three seconds, his face hardening into marble. "Where?"
A pause.
"Block the roads. Do not let him leave the borough. I’m coming down myself."
He hung up and stood up, looking down at Hannah with a mixture of anger and regret.

"What happened?" Hannah asked, standing up beside him.
"David," Adrien said coldly. "Your ex-husband. He’s back in New York."
