Chapter 3 - The Housekeeper’s Secret

At 6:00 a.m., the rain had stopped, leaving a blanket of thick gray fog hovering over the estate grounds.

In the small stone cottage near the rear gates where the senior house staff lived, Sophia Sutton was preparing breakfast. Her six-year-old daughter, Emma, sat at the small kitchen table in her pajamas, eating a bowl of warm oatmeal while coloring in a book.

The front door opened without a knock.

Sophia gasped, dropping a ceramic mug, which shattered on the floor.

Alessandro Moretti stood in the doorway. He was still wearing his dark suit from the night before, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his eyes dark, hollow, and terrifyingly intense.

Behind him stood two of his most loyal personal bodyguards, who immediately stepped outside to guard the cottage perimeter.

"M-Mr. Moretti!" Sophia stammered, backing up against the counter, her face turning white with fear. "I... I'm so sorry about yesterday! Emma didn't mean to speak to you at the chapel! I told her—"

Alessandro held up his hand, cutting her off instantly. He didn't look angry; he looked like a ghost walking among the living.

He walked into the small kitchen, pulled out a wooden chair, and sat down opposite six-year-old Emma.

The little girl looked up from her coloring book. She didn't shrink away. Her big brown eyes looked at Alessandro with a quiet, solemn understanding that belonged to an adult who had carried a heavy secret for too long.

Alessandro pulled the silver recording device from his pocket and laid it gently on the table between them.

Sophia caught sight of the device and let out a choked, terrified sob, covering her mouth with both hands.

"Sophia," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Where did your daughter get this?"

Sophia collapsed onto her knees beside the table, tears streaming down her face. "Mr. Moretti... please! Please don't hurt her! She’s just a child! She didn't know what it was!"

"I am not going to hurt her, Sophia," Alessandro said, his voice softening slightly as he looked at Emma. "I need the truth. My wife and daughter died three years ago. This recorder was in Lily’s room. Tell me how it got there."

Sophia wiped her eyes, her body trembling uncontrollably.

"Three years ago... before I worked for you," Sophia wept softly. "My late husband, David, was a mechanic at the commercial garage near the docks. A garage owned by Marco Romano."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. "Go on."

"David was working the night shift before the crash," Sophia continued, her voice shaking. "He saw Marco’s chief lieutenant, Paulie, brought your wife’s SUV into the bay late at night. David hid in the supply closet because no one was supposed to be in the shop. He recorded everything on his work dictaphone... he saw Paulie cut the brake lines."

Alessandro’s breathing became ragged. "Why didn't David come to me?"

"Because David was terrified!" Sophia sobbed. "Marco found out David had been working that night. Two days after the crash, David... David died in a 'hit-and-run' accident outside the garage! They murdered my husband, Mr. Moretti!"

Sophia reached out, clutching Emma’s small shoulders.

"David knew they were coming for him," Sophia explained through her tears. "Before he died, he slipped the recorder and the hidden toy walkie-talkie into Emma’s backpack and told me to run. I hid for two years in Jersey. But fourteen months ago, I took the job here as your housekeeper because... because I knew this was the only place Marco couldn't touch us."

"And the recorder in the wardrobe?" Alessandro asked.

"Emma," Sophia looked at her daughter. "Tell Mr. Moretti."

Emma looked up at Alessandro, her small voice steady. "My daddy told me to hide the toy in the closet where the little girl’s dresses were. He said if I put it deep in the back, the bad man wouldn't find it, and one day the big man in the house would hear it."

Emma reached into her small sweater pocket and pulled out a small, faded plastic key.

"Daddy gave me this key to the closet," Emma whispered. "I sneaked into the room six months ago while my mommy was cleaning the hall. I put the silver box behind the red boots like Daddy said."

Alessandro looked at the little girl. A child had risked her life to carry the truth across three years of shadow and blood.

Alessandro reached out his large, calloused hand and gently touched Emma’s cheek.

"You are a very brave girl, Emma," Alessandro whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Your father was a good man. And you just gave me my life back."

He stood up, turning to Sophia.

"Pack your bags," Alessandro commanded smoothly. "My men are taking you and Emma to my private estate in the mountains. You will have four armed guards with you twenty-four hours a day. You are safe now, Sophia. Marco Romano will never harm your family again."
