Chapter 4 - The Reckoning of Richard

Three days later, the high-security arraignment courtroom was packed with media reporters, federal prosecutors, and former business partners of the Sterling family.

Richard Sterling stood at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands and feet chained together. His pristine appearance was completely destroyed; his face was pale, his posture slumped, his eyes filled with dark circles of terror and exhaustion.

Beside him stood a public defender—the only lawyer assigned to him after all three of his high-priced private defense attorneys withdrew from the case when their retainer fees were frozen by federal prosecutors.

At the prosecution table sat the District Attorney, flanked by two federal prosecutors and Arthur Cole.

"This court is now in session," Judge Sarah Vance announced, her voice echoing through the silent room. "We are here for the formal reading of charges in the State v. Richard Sterling."

The lead prosecutor stood up, unfolding a thick legal document.

"Your Honor, the State charges the defendant, Richard Sterling, with thirty-four felony counts," the prosecutor announced. "Including Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Imprisonment, Domestic Battery with Severe Bodily Harm, Federal Tax Evasion, Corporate Wire Fraud, and Conspiracy to Bribe a Public Official."

Richard’s public defender stepped forward nervously. "Your Honor, my client requests reasonable bail. He is a prominent member of the business community—"

"He is a flight risk with severe federal charges pending," the prosecutor interrupted, pulling out a tablet. "Furthermore, we submit to the court the forensic medical report and full audio-visual recordings recovered from Mrs. Lily Sterling’s phone on the afternoon of April 20th."

The prosecutor pressed a button, and the courtroom's large monitor screens lit up.

The audio played clearly through the ceiling speakers.

RICHARD'S VOICE: "Let me explain how the world works to a simple, retired old man like you... My family owns this town. The local Chief of Police is currently enjoying a barbecue in my backyard... Go ahead. Call the cops. Let’s see who they put in handcuffs."

Gasps exploded across the spectator gallery. Journalists leaned forward, typing furiously on their laptops.

The prosecutor turned to the judge. "Your Honor, the defendant openly boasted about his ability to compromise law enforcement and suppress criminal acts. He poses a direct threat to the victim and the integrity of these proceedings."

Judge Vance slammed her gavel down so hard the sound echoed like a gunshot.

"Bail is DENIED!" Judge Vance ruled coldly, glaring down at Richard. "The defendant will remain in federal custody until trial!"

Richard stumbled backward, his chains rattling loudly. "No! Wait! Your Honor! Look at me! I was set up! Arthur Cole ruined my company!"

Richard turned toward Arthur, his face contorted in frantic desperation. "Arthur! Tell them! Tell them it was just an argument! I'll sign over everything to Lily! She can have the house! She can have the cars! Just pull the charges!"

Arthur slowly stood up from the prosecution table. He walked over to the wooden partition separating the prosecution from the defense table, stopping just inches from Richard.

"You told me I should have stayed in my lonely house, Richard," Arthur said in a quiet whisper that only Richard could hear.

Richard trembled, tears of terror finally spilling down his cheeks. "Arthur... please..."

"My house isn't lonely anymore," Arthur whispered back. "My daughter is coming home. And you are going to prison for twenty years."

As the guards dragged Richard away, screaming and kicking against his leg irons, Arthur turned his back on him and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
