Chapter 1 - The Execution of Code Black

The voice on the other end of the satellite phone did not hesitate, ask for clarification, or raise its pitch. It belonged to Marcus Vance, Arthur’s former operations director from a military intelligence outfit that officially did not exist on any government ledger.

"Specify parameters, Arthur," Marcus said softly, the faint hum of an encrypted server farm buzzing in the background. "Target name, location, and level of neutralization."

Arthur sat in the driver's seat of his pickup truck, his right hand resting on Lily’s cold, trembling shoulder. Beside him, she breathed in shallow, ragged gasps, her left eye completely swollen shut, blood crusting on her chin.

"Target is Richard Sterling," Arthur said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "Sterling Enterprises. His mother, Eleanor Sterling. Their primary base is the estate at 4400 Willow Creek Lane. Secondary targets include Chief of Police Thomas Miller and any local official on their payroll."

"And the objective?" Marcus asked.

"Total financial, legal, and operational destruction," Arthur answered, looking back at the massive wrought-iron gates of the estate in his rearview mirror. "I want their assets frozen by sunset. I want their federal liabilities exposed by midnight. And I want everyone who stood in that living room wearing handcuffs by morning."

"Authorization code?"

"Alpha-Seven-Niner-Zero-Echo," Arthur stated smoothly.

A brief pause drifted across the satellite line.

"Confirmed, Commander," Marcus replied, his tone shifting into absolute tactical execution. "Code Black is active. Financial strike teams are engaging now. Federal task forces have been notified of local jurisdiction compromise. We are sweeping their networks."

Arthur hung up and placed the satellite phone into the glove box. He threw the truck into drive and pulled away from the curb, leaving the laughter and pastel tents of the Easter party behind.

Within ten minutes, Arthur arrived at a private medical facility three miles outside city limits—a clinic owned by a former combat medic who had served alongside Arthur twenty years ago.

Dr. Joseph Hayes was waiting at the emergency bay doors with a gurney.

"My God, Arthur..." Joseph gasped as they gently lifted Lily from the passenger seat. "What happened to her?"

"Her husband," Arthur said simply, his knuckles turning white as he pushed the gurney into the trauma room. "Document every bruise, Joseph. Take high-resolution photographs of her neck, her face, her ribs, and her wrists. I want a forensic medical file that no paid judge or dirty prosecutor can throw out."

While Joseph and his nurses began treating Lily, cleaning her split lip and hooking up an IV line, Arthur stood in the hallway and opened his tablet.

The screen was already flashing red with incoming data streams from Marcus’s team.

The Sterling empire looked impenetrable from the outside—a hundred-million-dollar real estate conglomerate with deep political ties. But every empire built on corruption was held together by weak seams.

At 3:05 p.m., the first domino fell.

Inside the Sterling estate, the Easter party was still in full swing. Richard was standing near the outdoor bar, holding a fresh glass of Scotch, laughing with Chief Miller about how he had intimidated "the old man."

"You should've seen his face, Chief," Richard gloated, taking a sip. "He thought because he was in the military twenty years ago he could come into my house and make demands. I told him straight—this town belongs to my family."

Chief Miller chuckled, adjusting his holster. "Just make sure you keep Lily quiet, Richard. We don't need her filing a report at the station. It gets messy if I have to suppress public records."

"Don't worry about Lily," Eleanor Sterling chimed in, adjusting her pearl necklace. "She knows her place. She’ll come back crawling once she realizes her father lives on a fixed pension."

Suddenly, Chief Miller’s heavy police radio buzzed to life with frantic static.

"All units, all units! Stand by for an emergency broadcast from the State Attorney General's Office!"

Miller frowned, unclipping the radio. "What the hell is going on?"

At the same moment, Richard’s smartphone vibrated violently in his jacket pocket. Then his mother’s phone rang. Then two other corporate executives standing by the pool looked down at their screens with expressions of sudden horror.

Richard answered his phone. "What?!"

"Mr. Sterling!" his Chief Financial Officer screamed through the speaker, his voice crackling with sheer panic. "The federal authorities just executed a freeze on all primary corporate accounts! The Department of Justice has seized our servers downtown!"

Richard laughed nervously. "What are you talking about?! We have an audit scheduled for next month—"

"It's not an audit!" the CFO sobbed. "Federal agents just walked into the building with a warrant for grand racketeering, tax evasion, and human trafficking linked to the offshore shell companies in Grand Cayman! The bank just canceled your ten-million-dollar credit line!"

The glass of Scotch slipped from Richard's hand, shattering against the stone patio.
