Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Tower

By 7:30 PM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Cole International Development loomed over downtown Los Angeles like a dark monument to corporate greed.

On the top floor, inside the sprawling corner office, Victor Cole stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a glass of scotch.

Victor was a silver-haired, ruthless billionaire in his late fifties, used to buying his way out of every problem. But tonight, his face was contorted in deep, furious anxiety.

Across the room, Vanessa paced frantically across the plush carpet, her eyes red-rimmed, her designer dress still rumpled from her humiliating exit from the Mercer mansion.

"You idiot!" Victor thundered, slamming his glass down onto his glass desk, spilling liquor across a stack of blueprints. "You absolute, brainless idiot! I told you to be subtle! I told you to search his house quietly while he was at work!"

"I was subtle!" Vanessa shrieked defensively. "How was I supposed to know that little brat had a recording device?! How was I supposed to know she was spying on me?!"

"You got caught on tape abusing a child!" Victor roared, stepping up to his daughter and pointing a finger at her face. "Do you know what that does to our public image?! The stock price for our new real estate merger is dropping right now because Grant Mercer’s high-society friends are spreading rumors all over social media!"

"It doesn't matter!" Vanessa snapped back, her voice hysterical. "Grant doesn't know about the murder files! He just thinks I'm a bitch who broke a music box! He threw me out, but he doesn't know what was in those boxes!"

"Are you certain?" Victor demanded, his cold eyes narrowing. "Did you find Claire's journal?"

"No!" Vanessa cried, throwing her hands in the air. "The lockbox was too strong! I couldn't break it open before that stupid kid came in!"

Before Victor could respond, the heavy frosted-glass double doors of the executive office swung open with a violent bang.

Grant Mercer walked into the office.

He wore no coat, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, holding a heavy leather briefcase in his right hand. His dark eyes locked onto Vanessa and her father with a cold, terrifying intensity that instantly froze the room.

Vanessa gasped, stumbling back against her father's desk. "Grant... how did you get past security downstairs?!"

"Your security guard recognized me," Grant said softly, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "He thought I was coming to reconcile with my fiancée."

Victor straightened his suit jacket, putting on his best arrogant, corporate smile as he stepped in front of his daughter. "Grant. Look, my daughter made a mistake today. Her behavior with your child was unacceptable. But we are adults here. We can handle this quietly. Name your price for the emotional damage, and my legal team will draw up a settlement—"

"Shut up, Victor," Grant said.

The command was so flat, so utterly devoid of respect or fear, that Victor’s smile instantly vanished.

Grant walked over to the glass desk and set his leather briefcase down with a heavy, deliberate thud. He popped the silver latches open and pulled out the thick leather binder and the printed financial ledgers.

He threw them onto the desk.

Vanessa’s eyes fell on the documents, and every remaining drop of color drained from her face. She let out a sharp, choked gasp, her hands flying to her mouth.

"Claire's files..." Vanessa whispered in sheer terror.

Victor frowned, picking up the top sheet. As his eyes scanned the printed emails, the offshore account routing numbers, and the wire transfer receipt to the Los Angeles mechanic, his hands began to tremble violently.

"You thought you were so clever, didn't you?" Grant said, stepping closer to the desk, his shadow completely engulfing Vanessa. "You murdered my wife. You staged an accident on the highway to cover up your financial crimes. And then you had the audacity to walk into my home and try to act like a mother to my child."

"Grant... no... listen to me!" Vanessa sobbed, falling to her knees beside the desk, grabbing at his pant leg. "It wasn't me! It was my father! He forced me to do it! He made me wire the money! He told me Claire was going to ruin our family!"

"You lying snake!" Victor shouted, turning on his daughter in a blind rage. "You came to me with the idea! You said Claire was getting too close!"

"Both of you are disgusting," Grant said, looking down at them as if they were insects. "You thought you could destroy my family and walk away untouched. But Claire was smarter than both of you combined. She left a trail that even your money couldn't erase."

The loud, rhythmic thumping of heavy helicopter blades suddenly echoed from outside the skyscraper windows.

Bright blue and red emergency lights began flashing through the glass, illuminating the executive office in a chaotic display of light. Down on the street below, dozens of police sirens wailed, blocking off the entire block.

The heavy glass doors of the office swung open once again.

Special Agent Richard Vance stepped into the room, flanked by six heavily armed federal tactical officers with sidearms drawn.

"Victor Cole! Vanessa Cole!" Agent Vance announced in a booming, authoritative voice. "You are under arrest for first-degree murder, federal corporate fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy!"

Tactical officers flooded the room, pinning Victor against his glass desk and forcing Vanessa onto the floor, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around their wrists.

Vanessa shrieked and cried, kicking her legs as she was forced to her feet. "Grant! Help me! Please! I love you! DON'T LET THEM TAKE ME!"

Grant stood motionless, watching her get dragged away in chains, his expression cold, serene, and entirely unbothered.

As Agent Vance walked past Grant, he placed a warm, respectful hand on Grant’s shoulder. "Claire can finally rest in peace, Grant. You did good."

Grant looked out the high window at the glittering lights of Los Angeles, feeling a deep, profound wave of relief wash over his soul for the first time in eighteen months.

"Claire did this," Grant whispered softly. "Claire and Emma."
