Chapter 4 - The Net Closes

The realization hit Grant like a physical blow.

Vanessa hadn't entered his life by chance six months after Claire’s death. She hadn't fallen in love with him. She had systematically targeted him, seduced him, and worked her way into his home for one single, sinister purpose: to locate and destroy the evidence Claire had hidden before her death.

She knew Claire had compiled a master file against her family. And she knew that file was hidden somewhere inside the Mercer mansion.

Grant closed his eyes, a violent shudder passing through his broad shoulders. The grief he had carried for eighteen months suddenly transformed into a white-hot, consuming flame of righteous fury.

"She killed my wife," Grant whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, absolute quiet. "She murdered Claire... and then she walked into my home, wore my ring, and tried to abuse my daughter."

"Grant..." Evelyn was crying hysterically now, clutching his arm in terror. "Call the police! Call the FBI! We have to get out of this house!"

"No," Grant said firmly, his dark eyes snapping open, glittering with cold, calculating precision. "If I call the local police, Victor Cole’s high-priced lawyers will post bail, stall the investigation, and destroy remaining evidence. They have politicians in their pocket."

Grant picked up the thick leather binder and the encrypted USB drives, sliding them into his leather briefcase.

He pulled his smartphone from his pocket and dialed a private, unlisted number he had saved years ago—a direct line to Special Agent Richard Vance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes and Homicide Division. Agent Vance was a close personal friend of Claire’s father.

The line rang twice before a deep, authoritative voice answered.

"Vance here."

"Agent Vance," Grant spoke clearly, his tone dropping into an unmistakable command. "This is Grant Mercer. I have Claire’s final investigative files."

A heavy silence fell over the line. "Grant... are you sure? We searched for those files for months after her accident."

"I have them in my hands," Grant said, staring down at the handwritten notes in Claire’s journal. "Including wire transfers, encrypted emails, and the forensic proof that Vanessa Cole paid to have the brakes cut on Claire’s car. I also have audio recordings of Vanessa inside my house today, attempting to destroy evidence and threatening my three-year-old daughter."

"My God..." Vance breathed softly. "Grant, stay where you are. Do not contact Vanessa or her father. I am assembling a federal strike team right now. We are going to execute an emergency federal arrest warrant."

"I'll meet you at Cole International Headquarters downtown," Grant said coldly.

"Grant, wait! It's dangerous—"

"They tried to erase my family, Agent Vance," Grant interrupted, his voice laced with iron. "I am going to watch them put the handcuffs on her myself."

Grant hung up the phone. He walked back into the living room, where Emma was still resting peacefully on the velvet sofa. He knelt beside his sleeping daughter, gently smoothing her dark curls away from her forehead.

"Daddy's going to make everything right, sweetheart," Grant whispered softly, kissing her cheek. "Mommy is going to get her justice."

He looked up at his mother. "Mom, take Emma to your private estate in the hills. Put four security guards at the gate. Nobody comes in or out until I call you."

"Be careful, Grant," Evelyn pleaded, hugging him tightly. "Please, be careful."

Grant buttoned his suit jacket, grabbed his briefcase, and walked out the front doors of the mansion into the fading afternoon light, a man on a mission of absolute destruction.
