Chapter 2 - The Shadow Behind the Silk

"Security! Arrest her! Kill her!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking out of control as pure rage overwhelmed her shock. "She attacked me! Look at what this dirty, crazy woman did to my gown! Get her out of my sight right now!"

Four towering security guards, clad in dark suits with tactical earpieces, lunged forward simultaneously to grab Eleanor. But before a single leather glove could touch her shoulders, her phone chimed with a crisp, high-priority alert.

Without breaking eye contact with Victoria, Eleanor tapped the screen once, enabled the loudspeaker, and held the phone up high for the entire hall to hear.

A deep, commanding voice boomed through the high-end audio system of the device, echoing across every corner of the silent ballroom.

"Stand down immediately. Anyone who touches Mrs. Eleanor Vance will be permanently terminated from service and blacklisted from every major corporation across the entire continent."

The head of security froze mid-step, his boot hovering inches off the marble floor. His face went completely pale. He recognized that voice instantly—it belonged to Arthur Sterling. Sterling was the elusive, untraceable chairman who owned the entire international hotel chain, the land it sat on, and forty percent of the city’s total commercial real estate. He was a shadow sovereign who answered to no one.

The ballroom erupted into a frenzied storm of frantic whispering.

"Did he just say... Vance?" "Wait, is that Eleanor Vance? The one who vanished ten years ago?" "I thought her family was completely ruined! How does she have direct access to Sterling?"

Eleanor ignored the rising chaos around her. She knelt down on the cold floor, gently wiped a tear from her daughter’s soft cheek, and pulled the little girl into a warm, protective embrace. "Mommy's here, sweetie. No one in this world is ever going to hurt you again."

She stood up, her eyes locking back onto Victoria, whose face had completely drained of color.

"You called her street trash," Eleanor said, her voice carrying a terrifying, heavy weight as she took another slow step forward. "You thought because I wore a simple dress and kept a low profile, my child was fair game for your sickening cruelty."
