Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Collapse

The preliminary custody and criminal hearing was a media circus. Lauren’s family had hired a flashy defense attorney who specialized in high-society divorces, attempting to paint me as a cold, controlling husband who was using an isolated family accident to alienate a mother from her child.
Lauren sat at the defense table, wearing a modest black dress, dabbing fake tears from her eyes with a handkerchief. Derek sat next to her in an orange jumpsuit, brought in from the county jail where he had been held without bail due to his prior record.
"Your Honor," Lauren’s attorney argued, gesturing dramatically. "Mr. Vance is conducting a vindictive campaign. My client is a loving mother who was simply dealing with a hyperactive child who fell. The bruises were an unfortunate result of a disciplinary misunderstanding by her brother, who was babysitting. There is no pattern of abuse here."
The judge, a formidable woman with twenty years on the bench, looked over her spectacles at me. "Mr. Vance, do you have anything to add before I rule on the temporary custody injunction?"
My attorney stood up, but I placed a hand on his arm. "If I may, Your Honor."
I walked to the podium, placing my laptop down. I connected it to the courtroom’s digital display system. "I don't deal in arguments, Your Honor. I deal in audits. This is the video captured by a neighbor’s security system on Tuesday afternoon."
I pressed play.
The courtroom went so quiet you could hear the hum of the air conditioner. The sound of Emily’s screams filled the room, followed by the clear, sharp audio of Lauren telling her brother to keep her quiet because she didn't want to lose the house, and then threatening my daughter that I would hate her if she spoke.
Several people in the gallery gasped. The judge’s face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

But I wasn't done. "Furthermore, Your Honor, I submit this financial forensic report detailing the corporate fraud committed by Vance Logistics, proving that Lauren Vance and Derek Vance conspired to commit grand larceny to cover gambling debts, utilizing my family assets as collateral."
Lauren’s attorney slowly sat down, crossing his arms and refusing to look at his client. Lauren’s fake tears instantly vanished, her face twisting into a mask of absolute horror as she realized her entire life had just ended on a public screen.
