Chapter 3 - The Cold War Begins

By 6:00 AM, I was back in Emily’s hospital room. She was still sleeping peacefully under the effect of the pain medication, her breathing steady. The certified medical reports, complete with photographs of the parallel bruises and the X-rays of her two cracked ribs, were sealed in a manila folder inside my briefcase. Along with it was a flash drive containing Mrs. Alvarez’s footage.

The door clicked open. Lauren and Derek walked in, both looking exhausted but wearing defensive, arrogant smirks. They believed that because a few hours had passed without me screaming or hitting anyone, they had successfully managed the situation.

"Daniel, thank goodness you've calmed down," Lauren said, her voice dripping with artificial maternal concern as she stepped toward Emily’s bed. "The doctors are always so dramatic. We need to sign the discharge papers and take her home. A familiar environment is best for her recovery."

"She’s not going home, Lauren," I said quietly, not moving from my chair.

Derek stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. He was a large man, accustomed to using his size to intimidate people. "Listen to me, brother-in-law. Kids fall. Accidents happen. You’re making a scene, and it’s getting embarrassing. Let’s get the kid and leave."

I stood up slowly. I am not a small man, and the absolute lack of fear in my eyes made Derek take a involuntary half-step back.

"Derek," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "I suggest you take your things from my house and leave the state by noon. Because right now, every second you spend in Chicago is a second closer to your ruin."

Lauren laughed, a high, nervous sound. "Are you threatening my brother? Over a clumsy accident? Daniel, I am her mother. You can't dictate who stays in our house!"

"It isn't your house, Lauren," I replied, pulling a document from my pocket. "The deed is registered under my family's private trust, funded entirely by my income. You are a guest. And as for your maternal rights... we’re going to let a judge decide how much those are worth."

Before Lauren could scream, a knock on the door interrupted her. Two officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Child Protection Unit stepped into the room, accompanied by a social worker.

"Daniel Vance?" the lead officer asked.

"Yes," I said, handing him the manila folder and the flash drive. "Here is the certified medical evidence of felony child abuse, along with the eyewitness video identification of the perpetrators. The primary suspect is Derek Vance. The secondary suspect, for accomplice liability and child endangerment, is Lauren Vance."

Lauren’s face turned the color of ash. She looked at the flash drive in the officer's hand, then at me. "Video? What video?!"

"The trap is closed, Lauren," I whispered.
