Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Bloodline

Three days passed in a tense, gilded truce. Clara was confined to the upper wing of Vincent’s massive, heavily fortified lakefront estate. She was given everything she could ever want—expensive clothes, gourmet meals, medical attention—but she was entirely a prisoner. The security guards outside her door wore tailored suits but possessed the cold, lethal eyes of soldiers.
The only solace she had was the twins. Eli and Ava were fascinated by the mansion. To them, Vincent wasn't a ruthless mafia don; he was the magical "emergency man" who had rescued them. Clara watched from the balcony as Vincent walked with Eli in the courtyard. Her heart slammed against her ribs when she saw Vincent hand Eli a small, wooden toy train. The ruthless king of Chicago’s underworld was kneeling in the dirt, patiently listening to a four-year-old boy explain how the wheels worked.
Later that evening, Vincent entered her room without knocking. He threw a thick dossier onto her bed.
"What is this?" Clara asked, backing away from him.
"The reason you ran," Vincent said, pulling out a silver cigarette case before remembering her aversion to it and snapping it shut. "Five years ago, you saw me handle a traitor in that South Side warehouse. You thought I was a psycho who enjoyed violence. What you didn't know was that the man on his knees had just sold the transit routes of our logistics company to the Bratva—the Russian syndicate. If I hadn't broken him that night, they would have targeted everyone associated with me. Including you."
Clara shook her head, her hands trembling. "It doesn't justify it, Vincent. The world you live in... it’s entirely built on graves."
"And the world you lived in was built on an eviction notice," he countered ruthlessly. He stepped closer, his shadow swallowing her. "But that's not the only reason I’m here. My internal intelligence team intercepted a communication today. Your landlord didn't just decide to evict you out of nowhere, Clara. Someone tipped him off. Someone was looking for a blonde woman with twins matching my description."
Clara’s breath hitched. "What? Who?"
May you like
"Victor Romanov," Vincent said, the name sounding like a curse. "The head of the Russian syndicate. He’s been looking for a way to break my territory for years. He somehow found out about the twins before I did. If Eli hadn't called that number when you collapsed... Romanov’s men would have been the ones to kick down that door. And they wouldn't have brought a doctor."
The room felt suddenly ice-cold. Clara realized with sickening clarity that her desperate attempt to hide her children had inadvertently placed them right in the crosshairs of a monstrous corporate mafia war.
