Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage of the Wolf

The sterile smell of antiseptic mixed with the rich, deep scent of mahogany was the first thing that greeted Clara as consciousness slowly returned to her. She wasn’t on the cold kitchen linoleum anymore. The bed beneath her was impossibly soft, draped in high-thread-count Egyptian cotton, and a steady, painless warmth was spreading through her veins from an IV drip hooked to her arm.

Panic surged through her chest like a sudden electric shock. She bolted upright, the sudden movement causing her head to spin violently.

"Easy, Clara. You’ve been out for nearly fourteen hours."

The voice came from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows. Vincent Kane sat in a leather armchair, a glass of amber scotch resting loosely in his hand. He had discarded his rain-soaked overcoat, revealing a crisp black suit, the cuffs immaculate, though the memory of the blood she had seen on them five years ago flashed vividly behind her eyelids. His winter-blue eyes locked onto hers, heavy with an intense, suffocating focus.

"Where are my children?" Clara gasped, her voice raw, tearing at the IV line in her arm. "Vincent, I swear to God, if you touched them—"

"Our children," he corrected smoothly, his voice dropping an octave as he stood up and walked toward the edge of the bed. He didn't stop her from pulling the needle out, but he caught her wrist before she could swing her legs over the mattress. His grip wasn't painful, but it was an unyielding wall of iron. "Our children are downstairs in the sunroom, eating a breakfast that costs more than your monthly rent at that roach-infested apartment. They are safe. They are clean. And they are never going back to that slum."

Clara stared at him, tears of rage and exhaustion finally spilling over. "You have no right! You can't just break down my door and kidnap us!"

"I didn't kidnap you, Clara. I saved your life," Vincent whispered, leaning down so his face was inches from hers. The scent of him—expensive tobacco and raw power—overwhelmed her senses. "The doctor said your fever reached 104 degrees. Another night on that floor and Eli and Ava would have woken up next to a corpse. You ran from me because you thought I was a monster, yet you preferred to let my heirs starve in the dark?"

"They are my children!" she screamed, slapping his hand away. "I raised them! I protected them from your world! From the blood, the guns, the faceless men who disappear in the night!"

Vincent’s expression didn't change, but a dangerous glint flashed in his eyes. "You hid my blood from me, Clara. That is a debt we will settle later. For now, you will rest. Because outside these walls, a war has just started. The moment I brought you and the twins into this compound, my enemies realized I finally have a vulnerability. And I will burn this city to the ground before I let anyone hurt my family."
