Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next morning brought the arrival of Eleanor Sterling, Andrew’s formidable mother. The matriarch of the Sterling empire was a woman who valued lineage, elegance, and above all, absolute integrity. Clarissa spent the early hours frantic, berating the staff and demanding perfection, determined to cement her place as the future Mrs. Sterling.

"Where is that useless girl?" Clarissa screamed in the grand foyer. "Lily! Get the tea service into the morning room now!"

Lily appeared, carrying the heavy silver service. She had done her best to pin her ruined hair up, but a jagged strand fell loose against her neck.

Eleanor Sterling, sitting on the velvet sofa, paused as Lily set the tray down. The older woman’s sharp eyes immediately noticed the butchered locks. "Lily, child, what on earth happened to your hair? You’ve been with us for seven years, and I’ve never seen you look so disheveled."

Lily opened her mouth to speak, but Clarissa stepped in smoothly, her voice dripping with fake pity. "Oh, Mother Eleanor, it’s tragic. Lily had a terrible episode yesterday. A nervous breakdown, I'm afraid. She took scissors to her own hair in the conservatory. I found her sobbing among the orchids. I’ve been trying to shield Andrew from the drama, but I think she’s no longer mentally fit to serve this family."

Lily felt the blood rush to her ears. The lie was so monstrous, so perfectly constructed to paint her as unstable, that she felt momentarily paralyzed.

"Is this true, Lily?" Eleanor asked, her brow furrowing with genuine concern.

Lily looked at Clarissa, who gave her a cold, warning glare that clearly said: Say a word, and I will destroy you completely.

"I..." Lily started, her voice trembling.

Suddenly, the doors to the morning room opened. Vincent Moretti walked in, accompanied by Andrew. Vincent looked entirely at home, a dark prince in a world of fragile glass.

"An interesting story, Miss Vance," Vincent said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "But science has a funny way of contradicting fiction."

"Vincent, what are you talking about?" Andrew asked, looking between his fiancé and his business partner.

"I brought my own technical team to oversee the port contract security, Andrew," Vincent explained, stepping closer to Clarissa. "As part of the protocol, we ran a standard diagnostic on the mansion’s closed-circuit hardware this morning. It seems the conservatory cameras were upgraded last month with high-definition audio and video capture. Automatically backed up to an off-site cloud."

Clarissa’s face turned the color of chalk. Her hands began to shake inside her silk pockets. "Andrew, this man is invading our privacy! Why are his people looking at our security feeds?"

"Because," Vincent said, pulling a tablet from Marcus's hands and placing it flat on the table in front of Eleanor and Andrew, "some horrors shouldn't remain in the dark."
