Chapter 2 - The Silent Shield

The dinner held that evening in the grand dining room of the Sterling estate was a masterclass in high-society hypocrisy. Andrew Sterling sat at the head of the mahogany table, smiling warmly at Vincent Moretti, oblivious to the undercurrents threatening to pull his world under. Clarissa sat to his right, her platinum hair perfectly coiffed, radiating the arrogant charm of a woman who believed she was untouchable.

Lily served the soup. Her hands were steady, but the jagged, uneven line of her hair—hastily tucked beneath a black fabric headband—was a stark, bleeding scar of the afternoon’s cruelty.

Clarissa watched her with a mocking smirk, leaning over to whisper to Andrew, "Darling, we really need to replace Lily soon. Look at her hair. It’s a mess. She has no pride in her appearance anymore."

Andrew frowned slightly, looking at Lily with gentle concern. "Lily, are you alright? If you’re unwell, you can take the night off."

Before Lily could answer, Vincent’s deep, gravelly voice cut through the room like a blade. "Her hair looks as though it was cut by a butcher, Sterling. Or perhaps a jealous amateur."

The table went dead silent. Clarissa’s smirk vanished, her fork clinking sharply against her porcelain plate. Andrew looked confused. "What do you mean, Vincent?"

"Nothing," Vincent replied smoothly, his gray eyes locking onto Clarissa’s pale face. He lifted his wine glass, holding her gaze until she looked away, visibly sweating under his scrutiny. "Just an observation. Tell me, Andrew, did you receive the digital blueprint files for the new Lake Michigan port contract?"

"Yes, we’re reviewing the security measures tomorrow," Andrew said, relieved to change the subject.

"Good. My team will be monitoring the estate's internal feeds to ensure the data remains secure," Vincent stated. He looked back at Lily, who was clearing his plate. As she reached across the table, Vincent did something completely uncharacteristic for a man of his stature. He stood up, took the heavy silver tray from her hands, and set it down himself. "Thank you, Lily. That will be all for tonight."

Lily’s eyes met his for a fraction of a second. The gratitude in her gaze was fierce, but beneath it, the spark Vincent had noticed earlier was burning brighter. She bowed her head and withdrew.

Later that night, in the dark corridor of the servants' quarters, Marcus intercepted Lily. He handed her a small, sleek black smartphone.

"The Boss wants you to have this," Marcus whispered. "Keep it on you. If she touches you again, press the side button three times. And Lily? Keep your eyes open tomorrow. The mansion has ears you don't even know about."
