Chapter 3 - The Wolves in Champagne Satin

The morning sun rose over the city, casting a harsh, unyielding light on the Sterling family mansion. The grand estate, which had hosted governors, royalty, and elite galas for over a century, now felt like a sinking ship surrounded by sharks.

Inside the main study, the air was thick with tension and the smell of stale coffee. Daniel sat with his head in his hands, his wedding tuxedo crumpled and unbuttoned. Across from him, Eleanor paced the room like a caged animal, her silk robe stained with spilled wine from the night before. Vanessa stood near the window, her champagne satin dress wrinkled, her eyes red from crying.

"We need to leave," Vanessa said, her voice sharp and trembling. "Daniel, you promised me that if we pulled this off, the Panama accounts would be secure. My father’s lawyers just called—the Meridian Group has frozen the offshore routing numbers! The money didn't go through!"

Daniel slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk. "Shut up, Vanessa! Just shut up! This is your fault! If you hadn't insisted on sitting in that damn bridal chair, if you hadn't pushed me to make a statement to the press before the ink on the merger was dry, Emily wouldn't have reacted like this!"

"My fault?!" Vanessa shrieked, stepping away from the window, her manicured nails digging into her palms. "You were the one who told me she was a charity case! You told me her father was a mid-level accountant who managed a small fund! You lied to me, Daniel! You used me to get out of your own mess, and now my family is going down with yours!"

"Enough! Both of you!" Eleanor roared, her voice cracking with age and fury. She slammed her hand down on a stack of legal documents. "We are the Sterlings! We do not squabble like gutter rats! Richard’s plane lands in an hour. We have one advantage left—the pre-nuptial agreement Emily signed when we thought she was nobody. It has a non-disclosure clause and a non-disparagement clause with a fifty-million-dollar penalty if she damages our brand."

"Mother, she didn't just damage the brand, she blew up the factory," Daniel said hopelessly. "And that pre-nup was based on her old identity. If she’s Christopher Vance’s daughter, her legal team is going to shred that document in five minutes."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study flew open.

Two men in dark suits stepped into the room, followed by Arthur, who held a clipboard. Behind them came Emily. She was dressed in a sharp, pristine white power suit, her hair pulled back into a flawless, professional bun. She looked every inch the corporate executioner.

"What are you doing in my house?!" Eleanor demanded, drawing herself up to her full height, trying to summon the old aristocratic authority that had terrified Emily for years. "This is private property! I will have you arrested for trespassing!"

Emily walked into the room, ignoring Eleanor entirely. She looked around at the antique paintings, the expensive furniture, and finally let her gaze settle on Daniel, who looked up at her with a pathetic, pleading expression.

"Actually, Eleanor, it’s not your house anymore," Emily said, taking a document from Arthur’s clipboard and sliding it across the desk. "The Sterling Group defaulted on its luxury asset collateral at 8:00 AM this morning. The Meridian Group bought the debt portfolio from Chase Bank thirty minutes ago. As of right now, I am the sole owner of this property, the grounds, and everything inside it."

Daniel gasped, scrambling to look at the papers. "No... no, this can't be legal! There’s a grace period!"

"Not when your family attempted to fraudulently transfer corporate funds to a Panama shell account last night," Emily replied smoothly, leaning against the edge of the desk. "That’s a federal crime, Daniel. The bank invoked the immediate acceleration clause. You have exactly one hour to pack your personal belongings and vacate the premises."

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice desperate. "Emily... please. I didn't know. Daniel lied to me too! He told me you were forcing him into the marriage! He told me—"

"Save it, Vanessa," Emily interrupted, not even looking at her. "You wore champagne satin to a wedding because you wanted to be the bride without doing the work. Now you can share the consequences. Your father’s company will be liquidated by Friday."

"Emily, please," Daniel cried, falling to his knees right in front of her, mimicking the exact position Emily had been in the day before. He reached out to grab her hand, his face wet with tears. "Don't do this to me. Don't ruin my life. I’ll do anything. I’ll publicly apologize. I’ll crawl on my knees through the city—"

"Don't make this uglier, Daniel," Emily said, using his own words against him with a chilling, beautiful calm. She stepped back, letting him fall forward onto the carpet. "As your mother said... I was never built for this family. I was built to own it."
