Chapter 2 - The Aftermath of a Ruined Throne

The penthouse suite of the Meridian Tower looked out over the entire glittering expanse of the city, a stark contrast to the historical, stuffy luxury of the Sterling estate. Here, everything was clean lines, dark glass, and absolute power.
Emily sat on a plush velvet sofa, a silk robe thrown over her shoulders. The heavy, ruined wedding dress had been thrown into the trash chute an hour ago. She held a crystal glass of scotch, watching the liquid swirl against the ice. Her face was calm, but inside, a storm was brewing. For three years, she had loved Daniel. She had tolerated his mother’s snide remarks, his sister’s exclusions, and his own growing emotional distance, believing they were just adjusting to a new life. To find out it was a calculated play to humiliate her and install his mistress on her wedding day was a wound that would take time to heal.
But right now, anger was a much better fuel than grief.
The heavy glass doors slid open, and Christopher Vance walked into the room. He was a man in his late fifties, with silver-streaked hair, a tailored charcoal suit, and an aura of absolute authority that made world leaders nervous. Behind him walked Arthur, carrying a sleek leather briefcase.
"Are you alright, my star?" Christopher asked, his voice softening into genuine fatherly warmth as he walked over and kissed the top of Emily’s head.
"I’m alive, Dad. And I’m angry," Emily said, looking up at him. "How bad is it for them?"
Christopher smiled, a slow, predatory expression that explained exactly why he was the most feared venture capitalist in the hemisphere. "By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, the Sterling Group’s stock will open at a thirty percent discount. By noon, the banks will call in their margin loans on their shipping fleet. Daniel’s father, Richard, is currently flying back from a summit in Europe on a private jet he won't be able to afford the fuel for by next week."
"Good," Emily said, taking a sip of the scotch. It burned her throat, grounding her. "But it’s not enough. Eleanor Sterling tried to make my disgrace a tradition. She told me I wasn't built for her family. I want her to watch her family dissolve in real-time."
"Miss Emily," Arthur interrupted gently, opening the briefcase and sliding a tablet across the table. "We’ve just received an intercept from the Sterling estate’s private servers. It appears Daniel and his mother are not merely panicking about the merger. They are currently attempting to transfer their remaining personal assets into a shell company registered in Panama under Vanessa’s name."
Emily’s eyes narrowed as she scanned the financial logs on the tablet. "They’re trying to hide their wealth before the bankruptcy courts freeze everything. And they’re using Vanessa as the mule."
"Vanessa’s father owes thirty million dollars to the Sterling bank," Christopher explained, pouring himself a drink. "This wasn't just a sudden romance, Emily. Daniel and Vanessa have been plotting this for months. They planned to use our merger money to pay off Vanessa’s family debts, marry her off to Daniel after divorcing you with a prenuptial agreement that would leave you pennies, and secure their own positions."
"They thought they could use my father’s money to fund their affair," Emily whispered, a cold laugh escaping her lips. "They really thought I was that stupid."
Suddenly, Emily’s personal phone buzzed on the table. The caller ID showed Daniel’s name.
She looked at her father, who simply nodded, gesturing for her to answer. She swiped the screen and put it on speakerphone.
"Emily! Emily, please listen to me!" Daniel’s voice was hysterical. In the background, Emily could hear the distinct sound of Eleanor screaming at a housekeeper to pack her bags, and the shattering of glass. "You have to stop the liquidation! My father just called from the jet—he’s having chest pains! The board is threatening to oust me as CEO! It was all a mistake, Emily! Vanessa... Vanessa forced my hand! She threatened to expose some... some old family secrets if I didn't give her the spotlight today!"
Emily listened to the pathetic whimpering of the man she had almost sworn her life to, feeling absolutely nothing but disgust.
"Daniel," Emily said softly, her voice cut through his panic like a scalpel. "Did you think about your father’s chest pains when you pushed me onto the floor in front of four hundred people? Did you think about mistakes when you told me not to make it uglier?"
"Emily, I love you! I swear I love you! Vanessa is nothing to me!" Daniel cried out, his voice cracking with desperate, ugly tears. "We can fix this! We can get married tomorrow! Just the two of us! No press, no family! Just please, save my company!"

"The company is already gone, Daniel," Emily said coldly. "And as for love... you never loved me. You loved the illusion of control you thought you had over me. Tell your mother that the girl who wasn't built for your family just bought the mortgage on your estate. I’ll see you in court on Monday."
She disconnected the call before he could beg further, turning to Arthur. "Arthur, buy the Sterling debt from the central bank. I want to own every single brick of their house by midnight."
