Chapter 6 - The Unbroken Line

In the weeks following the gala, the academy changed. The 'cleaner’s daughter' became a household name. The scholarship program was expanded, and the gatekeeping that had defined the school for years began to crumble.
Vanessa left the academy, sent to a finishing school by parents who realized their daughter’s reputation was beyond repair in the dance world. She didn't leave with grace; she left with bitterness, but that was a shadow that no longer touched Emily’s life.
Grace Carter was no longer cleaning the floors. She had been promoted to the head of facilities management for the entire Whitmore estate, a job that gave her the financial security she had sacrificed so much for.
One evening, Emily stood in the studio. It was empty. She was a professional dancer now, having been scouted by the Joffrey Ballet.
Eleanor Hayes walked in. "You have a rehearsal with the company tomorrow, Emily. Are you nervous?"
"No," Emily said, looking into the mirror. She saw the same girl, but the hoodie was gone, replaced by the discipline and fire of a true artist. "I’m just ready to start."
"You remember where you came from, don't you?" Eleanor asked.
Emily walked over to the corner of the room, where a simple, worn-out gray mop was tucked away in the janitor's closet—a reminder she had asked to keep.

"I don't just remember it," Emily said, touching the handle. "I respect it. Because without that mop, I never would have learned how to move."
She stepped to the center of the floor, took a breath, and began to dance. She wasn't dancing for Charles Whitmore, or for the scholarship, or to spite Vanessa Blake. She was dancing for the girl who used to watch from the hallway, knowing that no matter how dark the room was, the light would eventually find her. She was finally, truly free.
