Chapter 3 - The Price of Jealousy

The news of the scholarship tore through the academy like a wildfire. By the next morning, Emily wasn't just 'the cleaner's daughter'; she was the girl who had dethroned the princess.
But Vanessa Blake was not the type to retreat. She was a daughter of corporate lawyers and socialites, and she knew how to wage war. If she couldn't out-dance Emily, she would out-maneuver her.
Emily arrived on Monday morning to find her locker covered in insults. Stickers that read 'STREET RAT' were plastered over her nameplate. Inside, her practice shoes had been shredded, the silk ribbons cut into tiny, useless strips.
"Think you’re special now?" Vanessa hissed, appearing from the shadows as Emily stared at the wreckage of her belongings. "A scholarship doesn't make you one of us. You’re a stain on this stage. Every time you step out there, people won't be looking at your technique—they’ll be looking at your mother’s uniform. You’re always going to be the girl who belongs in the bucket, Emily."
Emily looked at the shredded shoes, then at Vanessa. The old Emily would have apologized, would have tried to hide. But the Emily who had danced for Charles Whitmore now knew the truth: Vanessa’s cruelty wasn't strength. It was fear.
"You’re right," Emily said, her voice steady. "I am the cleaner’s daughter. And I know exactly how much work it takes to wash away filth."

She walked past Vanessa, head held high, and entered the office of the academy head. She didn't complain about the shoes. She walked into the assistant's supply room, took a pair of backup shoes provided by the scholarship fund, and stepped into the studio.
She began to practice. She didn't look for Vanessa. She didn't look for the laughter. She focused on the counts, the rhythm, and the freedom of the movement. She was no longer performing for the hall; she was dancing for herself.
