Chapter 1 – The Three-Minute Countdown

Chapter 1 – The Three-Minute Countdown
No one breathed.
The ballroom, moments earlier filled with music and champagne glasses clinking together, became unnaturally silent.
Victoria Sterling's fingers trembled for the first time in decades.
"What did you say?" she asked, her voice no longer commanding but strained.
Elena remained perfectly calm.
"I said the investigators will be here in three minutes."
Julian looked from his mother to his bride.
"What investigators?"
Elena slowly reached into the folds of her wedding gown and removed a slim silver envelope.
"I hoped today would only be a wedding," she said quietly.
"But your mother never intended to let that happen."
She handed the envelope to Julian.
Inside were dozens of certified copies.
International banking reports.
Corporate ownership charts.
Signed affidavits.
Julian's expression changed page after page.
"Mom..."
Victoria lunged toward him.
"Don't read another word!"
But it was too late.
The guests had already begun whispering.
Several prominent CEOs recognized company names listed on the documents.
A retired federal judge narrowed his eyes.
One investment banker slowly stepped backward.
Because every name inside that file belonged to companies everyone believed had been dissolved years ago.
Companies secretly connected to Sterling Holdings.
Companies involved in illegal transfers worth hundreds of millions.
Victoria forced herself to smile.
"A clever forgery."
Elena simply shook her head.
"No."
"They're originals."
"And every document has already been authenticated."
Julian looked physically ill.
"You knew?"
Elena nodded.
"I learned everything six months ago."
His voice cracked.
"You never told me."
"I wanted to."
She swallowed.
"But every time I tried... someone followed me."
The room froze.
Julian looked toward his family's private security team.
Half of them suddenly avoided eye contact.
Victoria spoke sharply.
"Escort everyone out."
No one moved.
Instead...
One security officer quietly removed his earpiece.
Then another.
Then another.
Finally the head of security stepped forward.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Sterling."
"I don't work for you anymore."
Everyone stared.
"When did that happen?"
He looked directly at Elena.
"Thirty-eight minutes ago."
Victoria blinked.
"What?"
"The Sterling Board voted."
She frowned.
"Impossible."
"The emergency meeting already concluded."
Julian looked confused.
"There wasn't any meeting."
The security chief answered calmly.
"There was."
"You just weren't invited."
Across the ballroom...
Every phone began vibrating at once.
Breaking News.
Federal investigators execute emergency warrants involving Sterling Global Holdings.
The headline spread like wildfire.
The orchestra quietly packed up.
Several investors walked toward the exits.
Nobody wanted to be photographed standing beside Victoria anymore.
Outside...
May you like
Sirens echoed across the river.
The countdown had ended.
