Chapter 4 - The Shadows of the Past

Taking control of Rose & Co. was only the first step. The company was bleeding financially thanks to my father’s gross mismanagement, and the press was having a field day with the "Vance Family Blood Feud."
Every newspaper carried photos of me in my wheelchair entering court, contrasted with photos of Tyler arriving at criminal hearings.
I threw myself into work, spending eighteen hours a day in Grandmother's old office, rebuilding supply chains, cutting off corrupt vendors, and restructuring the company. Sarah Chen stayed by my side constantly, ensuring I did my physical therapy exercises every morning and night.
Slowly, painfully, tiny miracles began to happen.
Three months after the board meeting, during an intense session with my neuro-rehab specialist, my right big toe twitched. It was small—barely visible to the naked eye—but Sarah saw it. She burst into tears, hugging me tightly as we wept together on the rehab mat. The nerves were waking up.
But as my body fought to heal, my family launched a desperate, cornered counter-attack.
One evening, while I was working late in my penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park, my private security detail alerted me to an unexpected visitor waiting in the lobby.
It was Lauren—Tyler’s wife.
She walked into my living room holding the hand of her six-year-old son, Mason. She looked hollow, exhausted, her skin pale and bruised around her collarbone.
"Bridget," Lauren whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm sorry to intrude. I... I had nowhere else to go."
I signaled for my security guards to give us privacy. Sarah poured Lauren a cup of chamomile tea.
"What happened, Lauren?" I asked gently, looking at little Mason, who was clutching a stuffed bear, wide-eyed and terrified.
Lauren collapsed into a chair, breaking down into uncontrollable sobs. "Tyler... he’s completely lost his mind. Ever since the court froze his accounts, he's been drinking constantly. He... he blamed me for not convincing you to drop the charges. Yesterday, he hit me in front of Mason."
My blood ran cold. The same pattern. The same monster.
"He threatened to take Mason away and flee the country before his criminal trial starts next month," Lauren cried, pulling back her scarf to reveal dark purple finger marks around her neck. "He said Harold arranged a private jet out of a small airfield in New Jersey."
"Harold is helping him jump bail?" Sarah asked, outraged.
"Yes," Lauren nodded hysterically. "Harold bought fake passports for Tyler and himself. They plan to liquidate what's left of their hidden accounts and leave you with the debts and the scandal. They are leaving tonight at midnight."
I felt a surge of rage so intense it threatened to consume me. Harold and Tyler weren't just fleeing justice—they were going to leave Lauren and this innocent child in complete ruin after years of abuse.
I looked down at my legs, then reached out and took Lauren’s hand.
"They aren't going anywhere," I said, my voice dead calm.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Detective Miller's direct line.
"Detective Miller," I said when he answered. "I have the exact location, time, and flight plan for Tyler and Harold Vance’s escape tonight. Send the SWAT team to Teterboro Airport."
