Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Settlement

By the second week of my recovery, Ryan’s life had completely unraveled. His bank accounts were frozen due to the impending legal litigation, his apartment building had asked him to vacate due to the aggressive paparazzi camping outside the lobby, and his own mother had turned her back on him to protect her own social standing.

Desperate and starving for a way out, Ryan and his high-priced, aggressive divorce attorney attempted a final, toxic play. They filed a countersuit, demanding fifty-fifty joint custody of Ethan and a massive marital settlement, claiming that because our house had been purchased during the marriage, he was entitled to half of my personal inheritance.

We met in a closed, secure deposition room in downtown Denver. I sat at the head of the glass table, dressed in a sharp black blazer, my face pale but steady. Julian sat right beside me, his presence an immovable mountain of corporate and physical protection.

Ryan walked in looking completely ruined. His expensive sweater was wrinkled, his hair uncombed, his arrogant smile replaced by the hollow, twitching eyes of a desperate addict.

"Emma, please," Ryan pleaded the moment he sat down, ignoring his lawyer's warning glare. "We can fix this. It was a misunderstanding! The postpartum depression made you remember things wrong! We’re a family. Think about our son!"

"Do not speak to my client, Mr. Parker," Jennifer, my head attorney hired by Julian's firm, interrupted with a sharp slam of her folder. She slid a thick stack of financial documents across the glass table. "Let’s talk about your custody demands, Ryan. We’ve run a comprehensive forensic audit on your private accounts over the past forty-eight hours."

Ryan’s lawyer frowned. "My client’s personal finances are separate from the marital estate—"

"Not when those finances include a monthly kickback from an offshore online gambling ring," Jennifer smiled, a dangerous, victorious glint in her eyes. "We found the encrypted wire transfers, Ryan. You’ve been using your investment firm's client profiles to launder money for an illegal sports-betting syndicate in Costa Rica. And guess what? The IP address used to authorize the last three transfers matches the Wi-Fi log from your luxury suite in Aspen."

Ryan gasped, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He looked frantically at his lawyer, but his lawyer was already packing up his briefcase, realizing he was representing a sinking ship.

"You have two choices, Ryan," Julian spoke up, his deep voice slicing through the panic in the room like a scalpel. "You can sign this absolute surrender of parental rights and a full waiver of all marital assets, walking out of here with nothing but the clothes on your back. Or, I press the send button on this tablet, and the federal marshals waiting in the lobby walk in here to arrest you for corporate wire fraud and international money laundering. You have thirty seconds to decide your future."
