Chapter 2 - The Confrontation at the Gates

Ryan scrambled to his feet, knocking over the nursery rocking chair as he rushed down the grand staircase and threw open the front door.
The bright Colorado afternoon sun blinded him for a moment, but as his eyes adjusted, his jaw dropped. Standing at the edge of his manicured lawn, flanked by two blacked-out executive SUVs and a team of private security guards, was Julian Vance. Julian looked immaculate, wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat, his expression as unyielding as the Rocky Mountains behind him.
"Julian?!" Ryan roared, sprinting down the driveway, his panic instantly morphing into the defensive, ugly rage of a cornered coward. "What the hell is going on? Where is my wife? Where is my son? Did you take them?!"
Before Ryan could cross the threshold of the lawn, two massive security guards stepped into his path, their hands resting deliberately near their holstered tactical equipment.
"Step back, Ryan," Julian commanded, his voice quiet but possessing a lethal volume that echoed through the quiet suburban neighborhood. He didn't take his hands out of his pockets. He simply looked at Ryan as if he were an unappealing bug under a microscope. "You don't have the right to pronounce their names anymore."
"She's my wife!" Ryan screamed, his face turning an unhinged shade of purple as he pointed back toward the house. "That's my son! You broke into my house! I'll call the police! I'll have you thrown in jail for kidnapping!"
"Call them," Julian replied, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Please, Ryan, dial 911 right now. Because the moment the police arrive, my legal team will hand them the forensic blood-volume reports from the nursery rug. We will hand them the medical logs from the Denver Intensive Care Unit, detailing how Emma arrived with less than two pints of blood in her system due to internal obstetric tearing. And then, we will play them your lovely little Aspen video."
Ryan froze, the wind completely knocked out of his sails. The color drained from his face until he looked as pale as the snow in his vacation photos. "The... the video?"
"Happy birthday to me, right?" Julian hissed, stepping around his guards until he was standing inches from Ryan. The billionaire’s eyes burned with a raw, protective fury that made Ryan instinctively take a step back. "While you were drinking whiskey and laughing about your 'high-maintenance' wife, Emma was bleeding to death on a floor she paid for, holding a starving infant. You didn't just leave for a vacation, Ryan. You committed criminal negligence and reckless abandonment of a dependent."

"I didn't know!" Ryan whimpered, his voice dropping into a pathetic, defensive whine. "She was always being dramatic! How was I supposed to know it was a real medical emergency?!"
"Because she told you," Julian whispered, his voice dripping with absolute contempt. "She begged you. And you chose a sweater and a sports car over her life. As of two hours ago, a temporary emergency restraining order has been granted by the state of Colorado. You are barred from coming within one thousand feet of Emma or Ethan. If you even look in their direction, I will use my entire fortune to ensure you spend your next thirty birthdays in a federal penitentiary."
