Chapter 4 - The Christmas Morning Confrontation

By 7:00 AM on Christmas morning, the sun rose over a blanket of fresh, pristine snow outside the hospital windows.
Richard woke up slowly. His eyes opened, foggy at first, until they locked onto mine. A weak, beautiful smile spread across his face.
"Evie," he rasped, his voice rough.
"I’m here, my love," I whispered, leaning down to kiss his forehead. "You're safe. You're in the cardiac unit."
Richard looked past me and saw Daniel sitting in the chair, eyes red, holding his father's other hand. "Daniel..."
"Dad," Daniel choked out, squeezing his hand. "Don't talk too much. Just rest."
"The angel..." Richard murmured faintly. "It broke, Evie."
"I told you," I smiled through my tears. "We’ll glue it back together. We glue everything back together."
A quiet knock came at the door. I opened it to find two police officers standing in the hallway alongside a sharp-looking woman in a charcoal suit—Sarah Vance, my long-time personal attorney and one of the few people who knew my entire history.
"Evelyn," Sarah said, stepping into the room and giving my hand a warm squeeze. "I came as soon as you called last night. I’ve reviewed the documents you sent over."
"And?" I asked.
"It’s grand larceny, fraud, and attempted elder exploitation," Sarah stated bluntly, her voice carrying through the room. "The paperwork Madison tried to slip into your house last night was illegally drafted using forged credentials. Furthermore, my investigator checked Vance Capital’s emergency filings this morning. Madison’s father was indicted by the federal prosecutor two days ago for operating a real estate Ponzi scheme."
Daniel stood up, his face pale but resolute. "She knew her family was going under. She was trying to steal my parents' life savings to bail out her father."
"Exactly," Sarah confirmed. "Where is Madison now?"
Before I could answer, the door swung open violently.
Madison stood in the doorway. She was no longer wearing her pristine winter white coat. Her hair was pulled back hastily, her eyes dark with fury and panic. She held a leather briefcase under her arm.
"Daniel!" Madison yelled, ignoring the police officers standing in the corner. "You need to come with me right now! Your mother took my private legal files from the house last night! She broke into my personal belongings! That is illegal!"
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't step toward her. He stood like a rock beside his father’s bed, looking at her as if seeing her true face for the very first time.
"They aren't your files, Madison," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "They were my father's execution papers. And you tried to make him sign them while he was dying."
Madison froze, her eyes darting nervously to the two police officers. "Daniel, baby, listen to me! She’s lying to you! She’s trying to destroy our marriage because she’s jealous of me! She’s just a bitter, washed-up housewife who—"

"Enough!" Daniel’s voice echoed like thunder through the hospital room.
The absolute silence that followed was suffocating.
