Chapter 2 - The Papers in the Dark

The rhythmic beep... beep... beep of the heart monitor in Room 408 was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.

I sat in the armchair beside Richard’s bed, holding his warm, rough hand between both of mine. His face had regained its color, his breathing deep and regular.

The door opened softly, and Daniel walked in alone. He closed the door silently behind him, looking small and lost. He walked over to the opposite side of the bed, looking down at his sleeping father, then at me.

"She went back to the house," Daniel said quietly, his voice hollow. "Madison. She took her car and left."

"Good," I said softly.

Daniel sank into a chair, rubbing his face with his hands. "Mom... I don't even know what to say. The things I said to you under the tree... 'Just a housewife.' God, I sound like a monster. I sound like..."

"Like someone who listened to the wrong voice for too long," I finished gently. "Daniel, for eight years, Madison has been subtly eroding your trust in your family. She isolated you from your old friends. She influenced your career choices. And lately, she started pushing your father to sign over the family trust and the house into a joint management account."

Daniel frowned, looking up. "She told me it was for tax protection! She said Dad was getting forgetful, that his business affairs were getting messy—"

"Your father isn't forgetful, Daniel," I said firmly. "He is fifty-eight years old and sharper than most men half his age. Richard came to me two weeks ago. He was worried."

"Worried about what?"

"About Madison’s family," I revealed. "Her father’s firm, Vance Capital, went into quiet restructuring three months ago. They are facing massive insolvency. Madison didn't marry you because she loved our quiet Larchmont life, Daniel. She targeted this family because Richard’s private real estate holdings and liquid assets are worth over fifteen million dollars."

Daniel’s eyes widened in horror. "No... no, she wouldn't..."

"Why do you think she brought those estate restructuring papers on Christmas Eve?" I asked him softly. "Why tonight? Because she knew your father was planning to announce his full retirement in January, which meant his accounts would undergo an independent audit. She needed his signature before those accounts were reviewed."

Daniel stood up abruptly, his hands shaking violently. "The papers on the table. She left them there when we ran out with the ambulance."

"She didn't leave them," I said, pointing to my purse sitting on the bedside table. "While you were talking to Dr. Brooks down the hallway, I had the hospital security escort me to the lobby to retrieve my coat from your car. I took the house keys from your jacket, Daniel. I had Nathan’s assistant drive me back to the house for ten minutes while they were preparing Richard’s ICU bed."

I pulled a thick envelope out of my bag and laid it on Richard’s bed.

"I have the papers right here," I said. "And what I found inside them isn't just a financial restructuring, Daniel. It’s a complete fraud."
