Chapter 3 - Standing Tall

Vanessa took a step back, her expensive silver heels clicking frantically against the marble floor. She looked at Daniel, who had dropped his glass, the amber liquid staining the pristine white rug like blood. She looked at her mother, who was hyperventilating against the mantlepiece.
"Ethan, please," Vanessa whimpered, her voice suddenly switching into the pathetic, manipulative tone she used whenever she wanted to escape the consequences of her actions. She dropped to her knees in front of my wheelchair, trying to grab my hands. "It wasn't my idea! Daniel forced me into it! He said if I didn't help them get the voting block, he would reveal... he would ruin my family's credit! I love you, Ethan! We've been together for three years!"
I looked down at her, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound sense of relief that the parasite had finally revealed its true colors.
"You love my crown, Vanessa. Not the man who wears it," I said softly.
I reached down, took her hand, and slowly, deliberately, slid the massive diamond engagement ring off her finger. She gasped, frozen in shock.
And then, I did the one thing that no one in that room thought was possible.
I took the gray blanket off my legs, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it into the empty seat of my wheelchair.
I placed both feet firmly on the marble floor.
And I stood up.
A collective scream of pure shock echoed through the ballroom. Vanessa scrambled backward on her hands and knees, staring up at me as if she were looking at a ghost. Daniel’s jaw dropped so low his drink spilled entirely onto his shoes. Uncle Martin fell back against a pillar, his face turning an ashen, deathly white.
I stood perfectly straight, six feet two inches of unyielding, healthy muscle, completely free of the paralysis they had built their entire treasonous empire upon. My spine was perfectly intact. My strength was entirely returned.
"The accident was real," I said, my voice booming across the grand hall, filled with the absolute authority of a billionaire CEO who had just reclaimed his throne. "The truck that hit my car on the freeway was hired by a shell company registered in Panama—a shell company that my security team traced back to you, Daniel, and you, Uncle Martin. You tried to kill me to take my company."

Daniel turned to run toward the terrace doors, but Arthur, my security chief, stepped into his path, his massive frame blocking the exit entirely. Two police officers stepped forward, grabbing Daniel's arms and pinning them brutally behind his back.
"You thought you were dealing with a tragic victim," I said, walking slowly down the marble steps toward my uncle, my footsteps sounding like thunder in the silent room. "But I used your own greed to let you hang yourselves. Every contract you signed, every asset you tried to redirect over the last three weeks while I 'lay dying' has been intercepted by the federal authorities. You aren't taking my company, Martin. You're going to a maximum-security prison for attempted murder and corporate treason."
