Chapter 5 - The Unveiling of the Shield

The next morning, the standard text algorithm on social media platforms was flooded with breaking news from the cook county circuit court. Assistant District Attorney Thomas Vance had suddenly resigned, citing "health reasons," before turning himself over to federal custody on charges of extensive public corruption and money laundering.
I drove back to our quiet neighborhood just after noon. The rain from the previous days had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, beautiful autumn sunlight that made our white brick house look like a painting.
I walked up the front steps, unlocked the door, and stepped into the hallway. The house was silent, but the scent of lavender was fresh in the air. I walked up the stairs to our bedroom.
Grace was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding the burner phone in her hand, staring at the screen in complete confusion. The 3:15 PM deadline was approaching, but the line had been completely disconnected, the numbers scrubbed from existence.
"Grace," I said gently from the doorway.
She jumped, nearly dropping the phone, her wide eyes moving to my face. She tried to instantly mask her terror, trying to pull up that familiar, protective smile, but I walked forward and knelt on the floor directly in front of her, taking her small, cold hands in mine.
"Elias..." she whispered, her voice shaking. "You're home early. I... I was just thinking about dinner."
"The phone isn't going to ring again, sweetheart," I said softly, looking up into her eyes with an absolute, unwavering tenderness. "Thomas Vance is in a federal holding cell. His task force has been permanently dissolved. No one is coming for your husband. No one is coming for our home."
Grace froze, her breath catching in her throat. She looked at me, then down at the phone, then back at my face, realizing the depth of what I had just said. "You... you know?"
"I was under the bed, Grace," I confessed, a sad, self-deprecating smile touching my lips. "Mrs. Turner told me she heard you crying. I hid beneath the floorboards because I wanted to make sure you were safe... and instead, I found out that my beautiful wife was trying to save my life from a pack of wolves."
Tears spilled over her eyelashes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of pure, overwhelming relief. She threw herself out of the bed and into my arms, burying her face in my shoulder as she sobbed, her hands clutching the back of my jacket like she was finally anchoring herself after a Category 5 hurricane.

"I was so scared, Elias," she cried, her body shaking against mine. "I thought if they took you away, my entire world would end. I didn't care about the house, I didn't care about the money... I just couldn't lose you."
"You are never going to lose me, Grace," I murmured, holding her tight against my chest, feeling her heartbeat return to a safe, steady rhythm. "The shadow I carry isn't a trap for you anymore. It’s a shield."
