Chapter 3 - The Spider's Web

By 2:00 PM, Cross Enterprises was officially in administrative receivership. The stock had been halted after falling 85%. The board of directors had voted unanimously to strip Damian Cross of his CEO position to prevent further legal prosecution. He was locked out of his own building, his personal accounts frozen, his name dragged through the mud on every major business channel in the country.
Ruined and desperate, Damian drove back to the Cross Manor, his head pounding, his knuckles bloody from punching his steering wheel.
When he walked into the grand foyer, he didn't find comfort. He found a war zone.
The foyer was filled with luxury furniture movers, private security officers, and a team of auditors in dark suits.
Evelyn Cross was screaming at the top of her lungs, holding onto a massive crystal chandelier as if she could physically stop the workers from taking it down. "Get your filthy hands off my heirlooms! Do you know who I am?! I am Evelyn Cross! I will have you all thrown in prison!"
"Ma'am, step back," an auditor said calmly, holding a clipboard. "This property, along with all internal furnishings exceeding a value of $1,000, was pledged as secondary collateral for Cross Enterprises' corporate debt lines. Everything in this house now belongs to Montrose Global."
"Damian!" Evelyn shrieked when she saw her son walk through the door. "Stop them! They are taking my antiques! They took my fur coats! They are taking my emeralds!"
Damian collapsed onto a leather sofa that was already tagged for repossession. "It's over, Mother," he muttered hollowly, staring at the floor. "It's all over. They took the company. They took the accounts. We have nothing."
Standing near the grand staircase was Vanessa Hale. She was no longer wearing her beautiful scarlet gown. She was dressed in casual jeans, holding two massive Louis Vuitton suitcases.
Damian looked up at her, his eyes hollow. "Vanessa? What are you doing with those bags?"
Vanessa looked at him, her previous affection completely gone, replaced by a look of sharp, cold calculations. "What does it look like I'm doing, Damian? I'm leaving."
Damian blinked, stunned. "Leaving? You're leaving me now? Today?"
"Don't act so surprised," Vanessa said, rolling her eyes as she pulled her suitcase handles up. "I stayed with you because you were a billionaire CEO who was going to put me in this mansion. Now you're a disgraced, penniless pariah who owes hundreds of millions of dollars to the most dangerous financial empire in the world. What exactly am I supposed to stay for?"
"I loved you!" Damian yelled, standing up, his chest heaving. "I threw away my wife for you! I hit Isabella for you!"
"You hit her because you're a weak, pathetic man with an fragile ego," Vanessa hissed back, her tone sharp as a razor. "Don't lay your violence at my feet. You wanted an ego boost, and I gave it to you because you were paying for my lifestyle. But now the bank is closing, Damian. And I don't work for free."
Evelyn gasped, pointing a shaking, liver-spotted finger at Vanessa. "You leach! You ungrateful viper! I welcomed you into my home! I helped you frame that wretched girl for my necklace!"
The moment the words left Evelyn's mouth, the entire foyer fell dead silent.
Damian froze. He slowly turned his head to stare at his mother. "What... what did you just say?"
Evelyn’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She quickly covered her mouth, realizing what she had blurted out in her anger. "I... I meant... I didn't mean..."
"You framed her?" Damian walked toward his mother, his voice dangerously low, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of realization and horror. "The emerald necklace... Isabella didn't take it?"
Vanessa smirked, pulling a small velvet pouch from her designer handbag and tossing it casually onto the marble table. "Oh, please, Damian. Don't play the innocent victim now. Your mother hid the necklace in her own vanity drawer before the party even started. She wanted a reason to humiliate Isabella so you’d finally divorce her and marry me. And you fell for it like the idiot you are."
"You..." Damian stared at the velvet pouch, his mind spinning.
He had hit Isabella. He had called her a thief. He had ordered her to her knees in front of fifty people—all for a lie constructed by his bitter mother and his gold-digging mistress.
"You ruined me!" Damian screamed at his mother, grabbing his head in agony. "She was saving us! She was protecting us for four years, and you drove her away with your vile, arrogant jealousy!"
"Damian, darling, listen to me!" Evelyn pleaded, crying hysterically. "She was beneath us! She was common!"
"She was a Montrose!" Damian shrieked. "She owned the world, and you treated her like dirt!"
Vanessa snorted, grabbing her suitcases. "Enjoy the street, Cross family. It's been real."
Vanessa turned and walked toward the grand oak doors, stepping out into the driveway where her sports car was parked.
However, as soon as she opened the front doors, she was met by four uniformed police officers and a federal prosecutor standing on the porch.
"Vanessa Hale?" the federal prosecutor asked, checking an official document.
Vanessa frowned, pulling her sunglasses down. "Yes? What is this?"
"You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate espionage, and tax fraud," the prosecutor announced smoothly.
Vanessa’s face went white. "What?! That's insane! On whose authority?!"
"On the authority of Montrose Global's forensic legal team," the prosecutor replied, motioning for the officers to step forward. "We have detailed records showing that over the last eighteen months, you received over $3 million in illegal wire transfers from Cross Enterprises' corporate accounts—transfers authorized under falsified consulting invoices. Furthermore, Ms. Isabella Montrose has submitted video evidence from last night's event proving your direct involvement in a conspiracy to commit extortion."
"No! Wait!" Vanessa screamed as the heavy metal handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. "Damian gave me that money! It was a gift! Damian, tell them!"
"Take her away," the prosecutor ordered.
Damian watched through the open door as Vanessa was dragged toward a police cruiser, kicking and screaming, her polished image completely shattered in front of the neighborhood news cameras that had gathered outside the gates.
Evelyn collapsed onto the floor, sobbing uncontrollably among the tagged furniture.
Damian stood alone in the center of the grand foyer, surrounded by movers stripped-down walls, looking at the empty velvet jewelry pouch.

He had lost his empire. He had lost his freedom. He had lost his dignity.
And as the cold wind blew through the open front doors, Damian finally realized the absolute depth of his mistake. Isabella hadn't just been his wife. She had been his shield. And now that the shield was gone, the arrow was pointed directly at his heart.
