Chapter 2 - The House of Cards Crumbles

The phone slipped from Damian’s fingers, thudding heavily against the plush carpet.

The name echoed in his ears, vibrating through his brain like a terrifying glitch in reality.

Isabella Montrose.

"Damian?" Vanessa grabbed his arm, her voice losing its sweet, melodious tone, replaced by a sharp edge of panic. "Damian, speak to me! What is happening? What did he say about money?"

"Isabella..." Damian muttered, his eyes wide and unseeing, staring at the wall. "Her middle name... her maiden name on her old file... she told me her family was in management... I thought... I thought she was just an analyst's daughter..."

"What are you babbling about?!" Vanessa snapped, shaking him. "That pathetic little mouse? What does she have to do with your business?!"

Just then, the bedroom door burst open.

Evelyn Cross stood in the doorway, wearing her silk dressing gown. Her face was pale, her hands shaking so violently that the gold diamond rings on her fingers clicked against one another. She held her phone out like it was a live grenade.

"Damian!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice stripped of all its usual regal composure. "My black card just got declined at the private auction house! They refused my deposit on the impressionist painting! And my personal accountant called—he says the mortgage on this mansion hasn't been paid in three months because the automatic transfer failed! What is going on?!"

Damian slowly stood up, his legs feeling like lead. "Mother... Isabella..."

"What about that ungrateful thief?!" Evelyn snarled, her face contorting with rage. "Did she report my stolen necklace to the police?! Is that why they frozen our assets?!"

"She didn't steal your fucking necklace, Mother!" Damian suddenly screamed, his composure completely snapping. The reality of his impending ruin hit him with the force of a freight train. "She doesn't need your stupid heirloom! Her family owns Montrose Global!"

Evelyn froze. The rage on her face instantly melted into absurd, bewildered confusion. "Montrose... Global? The... the hedge fund? The holding company?"

"They own our debt!" Damian roared, pulling his hair in desperation. "They own our suppliers! They own this house! Everything we have—the cars, the ships, the stock—it was all backed by her family! She was the one holding up the company!"

Vanessa gasped, covering her mouth, her eyes darting between Damian and Evelyn in absolute horror. "No... no, that's impossible. She wore cheap clothes! She carried an old leather bag! She let us mock her!"

"Because she was playing us!" Damian yelled, tearing off his pajama shirt and grabbing a suit from the closet. "She was hiding her identity! And last night... last night I hit her. I ordered her onto her knees in front of half the city!"

Evelyn stumbled backward, dropping into an armchair, her hand pressed against her chest as if she were having a heart attack. "No... no, no, no... Damian, you have to fix this! Call her! Tell her it was a misunderstanding! Tell her... tell her I didn't mean those things I said!"

"Call her?!" Damian snapped bitterly, his hands trembling as he tried to button his crisp white shirt. "She shut off her personal phone! She’s executing Phase One! I have to go to Montrose Headquarters right now. I have to see her before the 12:00 PM liquidation deadline!"

By 10:30 AM, the news had hit the financial outlets.

BLOODBATH AT CROSS ENTERPRISES: SHARES PLUMMET 70% FOLLOWING MASSIVE CREDIT RECALL.

IS CROSS ENTERPRISES A FRAUD? SOURCES REPORT UNDISCLOSED DEBT LIABILITIES OWNED BY MONTROSE SUBSIDIARY.

Damian’s luxury sports car squealed to a halt in front of the glittering glass tower of Montrose Global Headquarters in the heart of the financial district. Paparazzi and financial journalists were already swarming the sidewalks, shouting questions into microphones.

Damian pushed through the crowd, his suit disheveled, sweat glistening on his forehead. He practically slammed into the polished revolving doors and sprinted into the grand lobby.

"I need to see Isabella Montrose!" Damian screamed at the front security desk, slamming his hands onto the marble counter. "Tell her Damian Cross is here! Right now!"

Two massive, armored security guards immediately stepped forward, blocking his path.

Behind the desk, an elegant receptionist looked at him with cool, professional indifference. "Do you have an appointment, Mr. Cross?"

"An appointment?!" Damian yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings, drawing the stares of dozens of high-powered executives walking through the lobby. "I am her husband! Let me up!"

"Correction, Mr. Cross," a smooth, icy voice called out from behind him.

Damian spun around.

Julian, the chief legal counsel for Montrose Global, stepped out from the private executive elevator bank, flanked by three junior lawyers carrying thick leather briefcases.

"You were her husband," Julian said calmly, stepping up to Damian and handing him a pristine white envelope. "As of 6:00 AM this morning, emergency divorce papers have been filed with the Supreme Court under grounds of domestic abuse, fraud, and emotional distress. You are officially served."

Damian grabbed the papers, tearing the envelope open with shaking fingers, barely reading the legal jargon. "I don't care about the divorce! I need to speak to Isabella! Where is she?!"

"Ms. Montrose is currently in a board meeting determining the fate of your former assets," Julian replied, adjusting his tie. "She does not wish to see you."

"Tell her to come down here!" Damian begged, his voice cracking, all his previous bravado completely shattered. "Julian, listen to me! This is all a huge misunderstanding! The incident last night... I was stressed! My mother lost her necklace, and I panicked! I love Isabella! I’ve always loved her! Please, just give me ten minutes with her!"

Julian looked at Damian with a mixture of disgust and pity. "A misunderstanding, Mr. Cross? You struck her across the face twice. You publicly humiliated her. You allowed your mistress to insult her in her own home. And you demanded she kneel before you."

"I was wrong!" Damian cried, grabbing Julian’s sleeve. "I’ll apologize! I’ll get on my knees right here in this lobby! Just tell her to lift the credit freeze! My company will die in two hours!"

Julian gently, but firmly, detached Damian’s fingers from his coat sleeve.

"Ms. Montrose left a message for you," Julian said softly.

Damian’s eyes lit up with a pathetic sliver of hope. "What? What did she say?"

Julian leaned in close, his eyes cold as ice. "She said: 'Remember every word you said last night, Damian. Because the bill has finally arrived.'"

Before Damian could react, Julian gestured to the two massive security officers.

"Escort Mr. Cross off the premises," Julian ordered coldly. "If he sets foot on Montrose property again, have him arrested for trespassing."

"No! Isabella!" Damian screamed as the security guards grabbed his arms, lifting him off his feet and dragging him backward toward the glass doors. "Isabella! Please! Listen to me! I'm sorry! ISABELLA!"

The financial journalists outside snapped dozens of photos as the high-and-mighty Damian Cross was thrown onto the concrete sidewalk like a piece of trash.

Meanwhile, on the 60th floor, Isabella stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the tiny figure of her husband being humiliated on the street below.

She held a glass of iced water, her face unreadable.

Arthur Montrose walked up behind her, placing a gentle, warm hand on her shoulder. "It's hard, isn't it? Watching someone you once loved reveal how small they truly are."

"It's not hard, Father," Isabella said quietly, taking a sip of water. "It's just disappointing. I gave him my heart, and he only cared about the size of my balance sheet—a balance sheet he didn't even realize I possessed."

"What is Phase Two?" Arthur asked.

Isabella turned around, her eyes glowing with absolute determination. "Phase Two is Vanessa Hale and Evelyn Cross. Damian was the muscle, but those two were the venom. It's time to take away everything they used to hurt me."
