Chapter 5 - The Legal Obliteration

The divorce proceedings of Vance v. Graves didn't take months; they were executed with the surgical precision of a corporate hostile takeover. Because the prenuptial agreement was airtight and the evidence of Brent’s financial fraud was absolute, his defense team collapsed within the first week of hearings.
We sat in a private, high-security conference room in downtown Boulder. The room was quiet, overlooking the snow-capped flatirons. I sat at the head of the mahogany table, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit. Ivy was sleeping peacefully in a portable bassinet beside me, guarded by Molly.
Brent sat across from me, stripped of his expensive suits, wearing a cheap, wrinkled jacket. His eyes were bloodshot, his hands twitching nervously as he looked at the thick stack of financial documents in front of him. His mother and sister were barred from the building, forced to wait in a rental car down the street.
"My client is willing to waive all claims to any marital property, including any future corporate shares in Miss Vance's technology firm," Brent's attorney said, his voice exhausted. "In exchange, we ask that Miss Vance drop the criminal complaints regarding the household account transfers and allow for supervised visitation of the child."
"No," I said simply. It was the first time I had spoken directly to Brent since the night he locked me out.
Brent looked up, his voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic whine. "Tessa, please! I made a mistake! My mom was whispering in my ear, telling me I needed to be the man of the house! I didn't mean to hurt you or Ivy! You can't take my daughter away from me!"
"You didn't think about your daughter when you left her in the freezing rain three days after her birth, Brent," I said, my voice dropping into an icy frequency that made his attorney winced. "You didn't think about her when you stole forty thousand dollars from her diaper and medical fund to pay for your mother’s luxury consulting firm. You don't get to be a father when it’s convenient for your social media image."

Jennifer pushed a final document across the glass table. "This is a full termination of parental rights agreement, Brent. You sign this, and you walk out of this room without criminal charges. You refuse to sign it, and the district attorney will process the grand larceny warrants before you can leave this building. You have sixty seconds to choose your future."
Brent stared at the pen in his hand, his chest heaving as he realized that the empire of sand he and his mother had built had completely vanished. With a shaking hand, he leaned forward and pressed his signature into the paper, giving up the one thing he believed he could use to control me forever.
