Chapter 2 - The Miami Delusion

The penthouse suite at the Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne smelled of saltwater, expensive citrus perfume, and unearned luxury. Brent Graves stretched his legs out on the plush linen lounger, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean as the morning sun began to bake the Miami coast.
His mother, Diane, sat across from him, elegantly lifting a crystal mimosa glass to her lips. She adjusted her designer sunglasses, her face twisted into a smug expression of absolute satisfaction.
"You handled that beautifully, Brent," Diane purred, smoothing her linen tunic. "Tessa has always been entirely too independent. Buying that massive estate before she met you, keeping her corporate earnings separate... it was an insult to our family. Now that the baby is here, she has to realize that she needs a man to manage things. Locking her out was the perfect way to break her pride."
"Exactly, Mom," Brent laughed, taking a slow sip of his drink. "She’s probably sitting at Molly’s right now, crying, realizing she can't even get her breast pump or the baby's clothes without my permission. By the time we fly back on Friday, she’ll be begging me to take over the deed just so she can live in 'our' house again. I’ll make sure my name is on that title by Monday morning."
His sister, Karen, walked out onto the balcony, her phone pressed to her ear, her expression suddenly morphing from relaxed to deeply confused. "Brent... have you checked your email? Or the family group chat?"
"Why would I check my email on vacation, Karen?" Brent scoffed, dismissing her with a wave of his hand.
"Because you just received a certified legal document from Vance & Associates," Karen said, her voice dropping into a tense, nervous register. "It’s a formal notice of immediate property transfer and a forty-eight-hour eviction warning for all personal belongings located at 1400 Redwood Crest Drive."
Brent bolted upright on the lounger, nearly spilling his drink. "What? That’s impossible. Tessa wouldn't dare. She loves that house. She spent three years customizing it!"
He snatched his phone, his thumb shaking as he unlocked it. His screen was flooded with notifications. There was a copy of a fully executed deed of sale, signed by Tessa Vance and Arthur Vance, stamped by the state of Colorado at 9:03 AM. The purchase price was listed in bold, black letters: $8,500,000. All-Cash. Closed.
Right beneath it was a message from the newly appointed estate manager of Redwood Crest Drive:
“To Mr. Brent Graves. As of this morning, 1400 Redwood Crest Drive is the private property of Vance Holdings. The entry codes have been permanently deactivated. A moving crew has been hired to pack your personal belongings and place them in a secure storage locker in downtown Denver. You have forty-eight hours to retrieve your storage key from our legal counsel. Any unauthorized entry onto the property will be treated as felony criminal trespass.”

Diane’s mimosa glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the pristine white marble tile of the balcony floor. "She... she sold it? Without asking you? Without a court order?"
"She owned the house completely, Mom," Karen whispered, looking like she had just seen a ghost. "We never had any legal right to it."
