Chapter 5 - The Descent into Darkness

The elevator shafts were dead, meaning the only way down was the main stairwell—the exact route the remaining mercenaries were using to ascend.

Lily and Caleb slipped into the stairwell, moving like shadows. The red emergency lights cast long, distorted silhouettes against the concrete walls. Lily held the submachine gun raised, her eyes scanning every landing, while Caleb guarded her six, holding a tactical knife he had stripped from the first fallen mercenary.

They reached the third-floor landing when the door below them hissed open.

Two more mercenaries stepped out, their flashlights cutting through the darkness. Lily didn't hesitate. She fired a precise, three-round burst, taking out the first man instantly. The second mercenary dove for cover behind the heavy concrete pillar, returning fire.

Bullets chewed up the concrete walls, spraying Lily and Caleb with sharp stone chips.

I'll flank, Caleb signed, pointing to the structural piping running along the ceiling of the stairwell.

Before Lily could protest, Caleb grabbed the thick steel pipe, swinging his body up and over the stairwell railing with incredible core strength. He dropped down silently behind the remaining mercenary. With a swift, lethal motion, he neutralized the threat before the man could even turn around.

Caleb landed on his feet, wincing slightly as his injured rib flared with pain, but he gave Lily a thumbs-up.

They rushed down the final flights of stairs, entering the cold, sterile basement of the Franklin VA Medical Center. The air here was colder, smelling of chemicals and ozone.

They reached the heavy steel doors of the morgue. Caleb moved to a row of stainless-steel biohazard lockers used for storing tissue samples. He entered a complex code into the digital keypad, which was running on an independent battery backup.

The locker clicked open. Inside, hidden within a vacuum-sealed specimen bag, was a small, silver military-grade data drive.

This contains the names of every corrupt official within the Department of Defense who assisted in the ambush of my unit, Caleb signed, clutching the drive tightly. It’s the only thing that can clear my team’s name and bring the real traitors to justice.

"And it's the only thing keeping a target on your back," Lily signed. "We need to transmit it. Now."

"I'm afraid you won't be transmitting anything," a smooth, cultured voice echoed from the doorway.

Lily and Caleb spun around.

Standing in the doorway was the Director of the Franklin VA Medical Center, Director Vance, flanked by two heavily armed mercenaries. Vance wasn't wearing scrubs or a suit; he was wearing a tactical vest over his tailored shirt.

"Director Vance," Lily said, her eyes narrowing. "You're the one who leaked Caleb's location."

"The VA is an expensive institution to run, Miss Parker," Vance said with a sinister smile. "And Blackwood pays very well for... disposal services. I intentionally assigned you to Room 12 because I knew Caleb would refuse treatment from a clueless rookie, giving us a perfect excuse when he 'succumbed' to his injuries. Who knew the quiet little nurse was actually the legendary Sparrow?"

Vance raised his weapon, aiming it directly at Lily’s forehead. "But a ghost cannot save a SEAL. Hand over the drive, and perhaps I'll make your second death painless."
