Chapter 2 - The Hospital is Locked Down

They didn't leave because she told them to; they left because they were terrified of the legal ramifications. Concincaid walked out without another word, his head bowed, while Trevor and Mara scurried after him like frightened rats.

The moment the door clicked shut, Lily turned back to Caleb. The adrenaline was fading, leaving her hands trembling. She leaned against the bedside table, trying to ground herself.

Caleb sat up, the needle securely taped to his chest, venting the excess air. The exhaustion on his face was profound, but his pale blue eyes were sharper than ever. He raised his hands, his movements deliberate and intense.

You are Sparrow, he signed. The operative from Blackwood. The one who dismantled the human trafficking ring in Prague before vanishing.

Lily closed her eyes for a brief second. Hearing that name—even in sign language—felt like a ghost wrapping its cold fingers around her throat. Four years ago, she was a deep-cover operative for a highly classified military intelligence unit. When her team was betrayed from within, she staged her own death, altered her identity, and buried her past under a nursing degree and a quiet, unassuming life in a small VA hospital.

"Sparrow is dead," Lily signed back, her expression hardened. "I am Lily Parker. I dispense medication and check blood pressures."

Caleb let out a dry, silent laugh, pointing to the needle sticking out of his chest. Regular nurses don't perform emergency needle decompressions with the tactical precision of a combat medic, Lily.

His expression suddenly turned deadly serious. He leaned forward, grabbing her attention. Listen to me. I wasn't lying when I signed that they are here to kill me. It’s not the doctors. It’s who is coming for me. I managed to intercept a encrypted data drive before my team was ambushed in Syria. I hid it. They traced me here. They know I am defenseless in this bed.

Lily’s blood ran cold. "Who is coming?" she signed.

Before Caleb could answer, the overhead lights in the hospital flickered wildly. The steady hum of the ventilation system ground to a halt. Then, the standard fluorescent lighting shut off completely, plunging the hospital into a dim, eerie red glow as the emergency backup generators kicked in.

A second later, a robotic voice echoed over the PA system: "Code Red. Facility lockdown. All personnel shelter in place. This is not a drill. Repeat, facility lockdown."

Lily rushed to the window. Outside Room 12, the hallway was in chaos. Nurses were hurrying patients into their rooms, and the heavy, electronic security doors at the end of the corridor were sliding shut, sealing the ward off from the rest of the hospital.

"What’s happening?" Lily whispered aloud.

She looked back at Caleb. He was already out of bed, ripping the heart monitor leads off his chest. He staggered slightly, his body still recovering from the collapsed lung, but his military training overrode the pain. He moved to the closet, grabbing his civilian clothes and a heavy tactical belt he had smuggled in.

They cut the main power, Caleb signed rapidly. The electronic lockdown seals the building, meaning no one can get out, and local police can't get in easily. They are isolating the target. Me.

"How many?" Lily signed back, her tactical instincts kicking into gear despite her desire to remain just a nurse.

A strike team. Three, maybe four. Professional mercenaries. They will be disguised as security or local law enforcement. Anyone they encounter will be collateral damage.

As if on cue, the distant sound of a silenced gunshot echoed through the ventilation shaft. It was a faint, metallic pfft, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor down the hall.

Lily’s heart stopped. They were already on the floor.

She looked out the small glass window of Room 12. At the far end of the hallway, past the nurse's station, two men in dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, were advancing systematically. They weren't checking every room. They were walking directly toward Room 12.

And right in their path, hiding behind the main desk, trembling and crying, were Trevor Blake and Mara.
