Chapter 4 - The Corporate Trap

The information Margaret provided allowed our cyber-forensics team to execute a targeted counter-strike. By 4:00 p.m., the federal task force had secured an emergency search warrant for the executive offices of Apex Horizons. Julian Vance, the high-flying investment mogul who had spent the last two years trying to underbid Sterling Point on every major international contract, was arrested at his desk in front of his entire trading floor.

But Brandon was still at large.

Knowing his partner had been compromised, my ex-husband had panicked. Our tracking telemetry showed he had checked out of the airport hotel and was currently driving a rented SUV toward the Canadian border, hoping to reach a private airstrip in upstate New York where an unregistered charter flight was waiting for him.

I sat in the command vehicle of the FBI’s financial crimes division, parked outside our corporate headquarters. Grace sat next to me, her laptop displaying the real-time GPS coordinates of Brandon’s vehicle.

"He’s thirty miles from the airstrip, Olivia," Grace said, her expression tense. "The local state police are positioning spike strips along the highway, but the federal agents want to make sure he doesn't execute a remote data wipe on his phone before they secure the physical device. If he wipes that phone, we lose the direct cryptographic links connecting him to the Mauritius server."

"Give me the line to his car," I ordered, turning to the lead FBI specialist. "He still thinks I'm trying to protect my own reputation. He thinks I'm afraid of a public scandal."

The specialist nodded, patching my audio feed directly into the Bluetooth system of Brandon’s rental SUV. The line rang twice before clicking open. The sound of heavy, panicked breathing and the roar of a high-velocity engine filled the command vehicle.

"Olivia?" Brandon screamed over the noise of the road. "If you’ve called the cops, you're ruining your own career! The moment this story goes public, Sterling Point’s stock will tank! Your precious European investors will flee! You need me to fix the routing logs!"

"The logs are already fixed, Brandon," I said, my voice dropping into a low, chilling register of absolute control. "Julian Vance is currently sitting in a federal holding cell in Manhattan. He’s already signed a full confession detailing your cooperation in the corporate espionage scheme. The sovereign wealth fund has just increased their stake in Sterling Point by twenty percent because we successfully identified and eliminated the security breach within eight hours."

A sharp, ragged gasp left Brandon's throat. I could hear the vehicle's tires screeching as he took a corner too fast. "You're bluffing! You wouldn't risk the exposure! You loved my mother, you loved our lifestyle!"

"I tolerated your lifestyle because I was too busy building an empire to notice how small you really were, Brandon," I countered smoothly. "Look at your dashboard navigation system. The federal authorities have already redirected your destination coordinates. You aren't driving toward a private airstrip. You're driving directly into a state trooper blockade at Mile Marker 42."

"No... no, I can still clear the accounts!" he shouted, his voice cracking with genuine, unadulterated terror. "I’ll delete the tracking keys! I'll ruin you, Olivia!"

May you like

"You can't delete anything, Brandon," I said, watching the GPS screen as his red dot approached the final blue line of the police blockade. "Because while you were drilling through my front door this morning, my system executed a full biometric lockdown. You aren't a corporate mastermind, Brandon. You’re just a common thief who ran out of credit. Goodbye."

Through the audio feed, a loud, thunderous explosion of sirens, screeching tires, and the crushing impact of metal against metal echoed across the line. Then, a voice came over the secondary tactical frequency: "Target vehicle secured. Suspect is in custody. The device is intact."
