Chapter 3 - The Price of Vanity

At 1:30 p.m., the atmosphere inside the high-end restaurant at the St. Regis Hotel was quiet and exclusive. Margaret Hawthorne sat at a corner table, wrapped in a pristine white Chanel trench coat, her diamonds glittering under the low chandeliers. She looked up as I stepped into the dining room, her expression instantly twisting into a mask of pure, aristocratic disdain.
"Olivia," she sighed, not even bothering to rise as I sat down across from her. "I must say, your behavior this morning was utterly unhinged. Calling the police on Brandon? Claiming he broke into that apartment? He still legally owns a partial share of that property until the title transfer clears next month. You have humiliated our family name across the entire social register."
"Your family name is currently being typed into a federal indictment sheet, Margaret," I said, my voice completely flat, refusing to match her dramatic tone. I placed a sleek, black digital tablet on the white tablecloth between us.
On the screen was a real-time ledger of Hawthorne Global Maritime, alongside a list of every luxury asset Margaret had purchased over the last twenty-four months using the corporate expense cards Brandon had illegally generated.
"What is this nonsense?" Margaret scoffed, though her eyes lingered on the numbers. "Brandon handles our estate logistics. I don't concern myself with the technicalities of his business."
"This 'nonsense' is eighty-four million dollars of stolen institutional capital," I said, leaning forward until she could see the absolute lack of fear in my eyes. "Brandon didn't just use my credentials to rob my firm, Margaret. He used your personal social security number and your signature to register the offshore shell company in Mauritius. Every single diamond you are wearing right now was purchased with funds that were flagged as stolen state property three hours ago."
The color rapidly drained from Margaret's face, leaving her looking hollow, old, and suddenly very small beneath her designer makeup. "My... my information? No, that’s impossible. Brandon said it was a tax-sheltered inheritance from his grandfather’s estate."
"Brandon lied to you, just like he lied to me for five years," I said, tapping the tablet screen to display a copy of the federal asset seizure warrant that had been signed by a district judge twenty minutes earlier. "The FBI has already initiated a freeze on your townhouse, your vehicle leases, and every bank account bearing the Hawthorne name. Within forty-eight hours, you won't just be turned away from Cartier, Margaret. You’ll be turned away from your own front door."
"Olivia, please..." she whispered, her voice cracking as she reached across the table, her manicured fingers trembling violently. "You’re a woman of status. You understand how these things look. We can resolve this privately. I can talk to Brandon. He’ll give the money back!"
"He can’t give it back because he doesn't have the final clearance key," I said, pulling the tablet away from her grasp. "Only I do. And the only way your son avoids a twenty-five year mandatory sentence in a maximum-security penitentiary is if he tells the federal prosecutors exactly who helped him set up the secondary routing nodes in Europe."
"He... he had a partner," Margaret stammered, her desperation completely shattering her high-society facade. "A man named Julian Vance. He’s a senior director at the rival venture firm, Apex Horizons. He’s the one who provided Brandon with the keylogger software. He promised Brandon that if they pulled this off, they would destroy Sterling Point and buy out your shares for pennies on the dollar."

I closed the tablet with a sharp, definitive click. The final piece of the puzzle had just dropped into place. Brandon hadn't acted alone. He had been the inside man for a corporate assassination attempt directed at my firm.
"Thank you, Margaret," I said, standing up from the table. "You just bought yourself a slightly better seat at the witness stand. Enjoy your lunch. It’s the last one you’ll be able to charge to my name."
