Chapter 5 - The Shelter of the Storm

The aftermath of the gala was a category-five media storm. Every newspaper, news channel, and social media platform was flooded with the video of Dr. Charles Montgomery’s arrest. The city’s celebrated hero had become its most despised villain overnight.

But I didn't see any of it.

Arthur had swept me away through a private exit before the press could corner me. He drove me himself to his private, heavily fortified estate high in the hills overlooking the ocean—a sanctuary surrounded by miles of private forest and elite security.

For the first time in a year, I woke up in a room where the door didn't need to be locked from the inside out of fear. The bed was massive, covered in soft silk sheets, and the air smelled of fresh rain and lavender.

A quiet knock rattled the door. Arthur walked inside, carrying a tray of fresh tea and a bowl of warm soup. He had traded his tailored tuxedo for a comfortable black cashmere sweater, looking less like a distant billionaire and more like the man I had loved in silence for so long.

"How are you feeling, Elena?" he asked gently, setting the tray down on the bedside table. He sat on the edge of the mattress, keeping a respectful distance.

"I... I don't know," I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes again, though this time, they weren't tears of fear. "It feels like a dream. I keep expecting him to burst through the door."

"He will never touch you again, Elena. I’ve personally retained the top prosecutorial team in the country. Charles was denied bail this morning; he will spend the rest of his life inside a maximum-security cell," Arthur said, his hand resting on the mattress, inches from mine.

I looked at him, my heart aching with the weight of the secret I had carried for a year. "Why did you do all this for me, Arthur? I’m just your assistant. You risked your reputation, your hotel, your entire network to save me."

Arthur slowly reached out, his long fingers gently cupping my cheek. His touch was incredibly light, as if he were holding a priceless, fragile piece of art.

"Because I have loved you since the moment you walked into my office a year ago, Elena," he confessed, his voice thick with an emotion he had kept hidden behind corporate walls. "Every time I saw you hide your smiles, every time I noticed you flinch when someone moved too fast... it broke me. I didn't know the truth until last night, but now that I do, I am never letting you go. If you’ll let me, I want to spend the rest of my life protecting you."
