Chapter 3 - The Gala of Deception

The grand ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the city’s ultra-elite dressed in haute couture. More than a thousand guests—senators, judges, celebrities, and billionaires—applauded loudly as Charles and I walked toward the VIP head table.

Charles smiled brilliantly, waving to the cameras, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist. To the world, he was the dashing, brilliant surgeon, and I was the lucky, beautiful fiancée. No one saw the way his fingers pressed into my bruised ribs every time I took a breath that was too deep.

"Look at them," a wealthy socialite whispered nearby. "The perfect couple. Dr. Montgomery saved the mayor’s son last month, you know. He’s a living saint."

I sat at the table, my body trembling beneath the silk gown. Across the ballroom, sitting at the most prominent table under the central chandelier, was Arthur Vance. He was surrounded by city officials, but his eyes never left our table. Every time Charles leaned in to whisper a threat in my ear, Arthur’s grip on his crystal glass tightened.

At 9:00 PM, the house lights dimmed, and the master of ceremonies took the stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we honor a man whose hands bring life, whose heart belongs to the community, and whose charity work has saved thousands of underprivileged children across the state," the announcer boomed. "Please welcome to the stage, the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award, Dr. Charles Montgomery!"

The room erupted into a thunderous standing ovation. Charles stood up, smoothing his tuxedo, a look of supreme, arrogant triumph on his face. He kissed my cheek—a cold, performative gesture for the cameras—before marching up the steps to the stage.

He accepted the heavy gold trophy, shaking hands with the presenter. He stepped up to the microphone, clearing his throat.

"Thank you, thank you," Charles said, his voice amplified by the massive surround-sound speakers. "Medicine isn't just a profession for me; it’s a calling to protect the vulnerable. To ensure that those who cannot defend themselves are shielded from pain..."

Suddenly, the microphone cut out with a harsh electronic screech.

The teleprompter behind the podium flickered violently, the scrolling text of Charles's speech disappearing, replaced by a black screen. The celebratory music died in an instant.

"What's going on with the tech team?" Charles muttered, his perfect smile faltering for a fraction of a second as he looked over at the stage manager.

Then, the massive, three-story digital projection screens behind him flashed to life. But it wasn't a slideshow of his medical achievements. It was a high-definition image of a medical report—my medical report from an out-of-state emergency clinic—detailing internal bleeding, broken ribs, and a fractured wrist, all dated over the past year.

The ballroom fell into a suffocating, dead silence.
