Chapter 4 - The Final Reckoning

The board meeting was a disaster for Grant. As the major stakeholder through the trust, I had instructed Marcus to present the evidence of his financial misconduct. The board didn't just fire him; they initiated legal proceedings for fraud.
Grant was left with nothing but a mountain of debt and a criminal investigation hanging over his head. But the victory for me wasn't in the boardroom; it was in the nursery.
With the legal status of the marriage invalidated by his own deceitful haste, my lawyers had successfully petitioned to have the custody order dismissed and full guardianship restored to me. When I finally walked into the NICU to hold my babies, the weight of the last week seemed to evaporate.
However, the world is a cruel place for those who fall from grace. Grant, desperate and cornered, decided to take one final, reckless step. He showed up at the hospital again, this time not with lawyers, but with a gun.
The security alarms blared. I was in the room with the babies when the door burst open. Grant was trembling, his eyes wild.
"You're going to call your lawyers," he screamed, "and you're going to sign over the assets! I don't care what it takes! You’re going to give me my life back!"
I stood between him and the incubators. I wasn't afraid. I had faced death once already; a desperate man with a gun held no power over me.
"You have no life to go back to, Grant," I said, my voice steady. "Even if you kill me, the trust stays with the children. They will grow up knowing exactly what kind of man their father was. Is this how you want to be remembered? As a coward who killed his children's mother?"
He hesitated, the barrel shaking. Outside, the sirens of the police approached. The tactical team had been alerted the moment he bypassed the lobby.

"Think about it, Grant," I whispered. "Is a bank account worth dying for?"
He looked at the babies, then back at me. The realization of his pathetic existence finally broke him. He dropped the gun, sinking to his knees as the doors were kicked open.
