Chapter 8 - The Political Collapse

The fallout from the Linwood ledger was swift, silent, and devastating.

On a Tuesday afternoon in early December, Senator Arthur Linwood held a live, televised press conference from his offices in Harrisburg. He looked old, his signature silver hair looking flat and dull under the studio lights, his hands shaking slightly as he adjusted his microphone.

"Due to recent health complications and a desire to spend more time with my family," Linwood announced, his voice cracking slightly, "I am announcing my immediate resignation from the United States Senate, effective at midnight tonight."

Behind the camera, the reporters were shouting questions, their flashes illuminating the sudden, frantic exit of his staff. They didn't know about the federal grand jury indictment that had been signed at nine o'clock that morning, or the three federal marshals who were currently waiting for him in the parking garage below the studio.

I watched the broadcast from the large flat screen in the living room of the Bryn Mawr house. Lena sat beside me on the sofa, a large mug of hot chocolate between her hands.

"You really did it, didn't you?" Lena whispered, looking at me with a level of awe that made me smile. "You didn't just clear out the husband who hurt you; you pulled down the entire political scaffolding that allowed him to exist."

"People like Daniel can only thrive when the system above them is just as rotten as they are, Lena," I said, leaning my head back against the sofa cushions, watching the news ticker scroll across the bottom of the screen. SENATOR LINWOOD RESIGNS AMID FEDERAL FRAUD INQUIRY. "If you leave the foundation in place, the house just grows the same mold all over again. I wanted to make sure this soil was completely clean."

"What’s next for you, Vanessa?" she asked, turning to look at me. "The task force starts its public sessions in January. You’re going to be the most visible investigator in the state."

"Next," I said, standing up and walking toward the window to watch the snow begin to fall over the quiet garden. "I'm going to finish my hot chocolate. And then I’m going to plan a new garden for the spring. I think I’d like some white hydrangeas near the stone wall. They grow beautifully when you give them enough space."
