Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Execution

The preliminary bail hearing was held in Room 402 of the City Hall Justice Center. I couldn't attend in person—the burns across my shoulders made it impossible to wear anything heavier than a loose medical silk wrap—but Lena had set up a secure digital feed from my hospital bed directly into the courtroom’s public gallery stream.

On the screen, Daniel looked terrible. The pristine corporate warrior had been replaced by a man who hadn't slept or shaved in seventy-two hours. His orange jumpsuit was oversized, making his shoulders look narrow and slumped. Beside him, Vivian sat in her own jumpsuit, her face haggard, her signature pearls replaced by a plastic identification wristband.

Judge Harrison sat on the high bench, his expression a mask of stern, professional neutrality that didn't quite hide the nervous twitch in his left eyelid.

"The defense has presented a substantial property bond totaling two point four million dollars," Judge Harrison declared, his gavel resting loosely beneath his hand. "Given the defendants' deep ties to the community and lack of prior criminal history, this court is inclined to grant pre-trial release with electronic monitoring—"

"Motion to intervene, Your Honor," a deep, booming voice interrupted from the back of the courtroom.

The camera angle shifted to show Marcus Vance stepping through the heavy wooden swinging gates, flanked by two federal marshals in dark suits. Behind them walked Assistant US Attorney Sarah Jenkins, a woman I had worked with on three separate corporate task forces before my marriage.

Judge Harrison’s face instantly hardened. "Mr. Vance, this is a local municipal bail hearing. You have no standing to interrupt these proceedings. Sit down or I will find you in contempt."

"I have standing under Federal Rule 60, Your Honor," Sarah Jenkins said, stepping up to the podium, her voice carrying an absolute weight that froze the entire room. "I am here on behalf of the Department of Justice. We have just unsealed a twenty-four count indictment charging Mr. Daniel Carter and Mrs. Vivian Carter with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bank fraud, and interstate transport of stolen securities."

Daniel’s defense attorney jumped to his feet. "Your Honor, this is a ambush! The federal charges have nothing to do with the local assault case currently before this bench!"

"They have everything to do with this bench, Mr. Davis," Jenkins replied coldly. She turned and looked directly up at Judge Harrison. "Because the federal grand jury has also issued an emergency arrest warrant for Judge Robert Harrison for receiving bribes, conspiracy to commit fraud, and obstruction of justice."

A collective gasp echoed through the crowded gallery. On the monitor, I watched Judge Harrison’s hand fly to his chest, his mouth dropping open as the two federal marshals walked up the steps of the dais, past the court reporter, and placed their hands on his black silk robes.

"Robert Harrison, you are under arrest," the lead marshal declared, his voice perfectly clear over the microphone stream. "Step away from the bench."

Daniel let out a low, animalistic wail from the defense table. He turned toward his mother, his hands clawing at the air as if he could somehow pull back the reality that was crushing them. Vivian didn't move. She simply stared at the table, her eyes completely vacant as she realized that the high-society world she had built on my father's money had just dissolved into a federal prison cell.

From my hospital bed, I reached out and gently pressed the remote control, turning off the monitor. The room returned to its quiet, sterile peace.

"Checkmate, Daniel," I whispered into the quiet room.
