Chapter 7 - The Colonel's Lawn

One year later.
The summer sun was shining brightly over the expansive green lawn of the commander’s quarters at Fort Sheridan. The brick house was decorated with colorful balloons, a large banner stretching across the porch that read: Happy 1st Birthday, Jimmy!
The yard was filled with the sound of laughter, upbeat music, and the smell of a barbecue. Dozens of guests—base personnel, the loyal MPs who had broken through the apartment door, Captain Patel, and several new civilian friends Emily had made through her volunteer work at the base’s family support group—were mingling happily.
Emily stood near the center of the lawn, looking breathtakingly beautiful in a yellow sundress, her skin glowing with health and vitality. The pale silver shadows of her past were completely gone, replaced by an aura of absolute confidence and independence. She watched as her son, Jimmy, took a series of wobbly, excited steps across the grass, his tiny legs moving with a determination that made everyone cheer.
Running right behind the toddler was Sergeant Major Marcus Vance, holding a tiny plastic toy sword, pretending to lose a tactical battle to the one-year-old.
"He’s outflanking us, Colonel!" Vance shouted with a laugh, dropping to his knees as Jimmy giggled and collapsed onto the soft grass.
Colonel Bennett walked out from the porch, carrying a massive birthday cake shaped like a military transport plane. He had retired from active duty three months prior, trading his formal dress uniform for a comfortable polo shirt and a pair of grandfatherly jeans. His face looked ten years younger, the hard lines of combat replaced by wrinkles of constant laughter.
He set the cake down on the picnic table and walked over to Emily, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her into a warm embrace.
"He’s got your mother’s eyes, Emmy," the Colonel murmured, looking at Jimmy, who was currently trying to climb onto Sergeant Major Vance’s shoulders. "And he’s got the Bennett heart."
"He’s safe, Dad," Emily said softly, resting her head against her father’s shoulder, her eyes drinking in the beautiful, sun-drenched scene of her new life. "We both are."
The crowd gathered around the table as the candles were lit, their voices joining together in a thunderous chorus of Happy Birthday. As Jimmy blew out his single candle with the help of his mother and grandfather, the applause echoed across the historic base, a sound of pure triumph over adversity.
