Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

By nine o'clock the following morning, the civilian world was beginning to clash violently with the military machine.

Inside the sleek corporate offices of the Cook County District Attorney, Linda Miller was shouting at a bewildered public defender, her expensive leather purse slamming against the mahogany desk. Ryan sat beside her, dressed in a wrinkled shirt, his fingers biting into his palms as his mother raged.

"This is kidnapping!" Linda roared. "My son’s wife was illegally abducted from her home by men with guns! I don't care if he’s a colonel or the President of the United States—he cannot use federal troops to settle a domestic marital dispute! I want restraining orders filed! I want the media notified!"

The lawyer sighed, rubbing his temples as he looked over a thick stack of documents that had just been couriered to his desk by a military courier. "Mrs. Miller, shut up."

Linda blinked, her mouth dropping open. "Excuse me?"

"You don't understand the arena you just jumped into," the attorney said, turning the documents around so they could see the official gold seal of the Department of Defense. "Colonel Bennett didn't file a standard police report. He filed a multi-jurisdictional federal protection claim under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act and the Interstate Domestic Violence Prevention protocol. Because Emily is a registered dependent on a federal military installation, the base has immediate emergency custody rights."

Ryan swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "What... what does that mean for me?"

"It means you’re not dealing with a local sheriff anymore, Ryan," the lawyer said coldly. "The military police have already handed over the forensic medical photos of your wife’s injuries to the state prosecutor. They’ve also attached a financial audit. It seems Colonel Bennett’s intelligence unit spent the last twelve hours digging into your banking history."

Linda’s eyes went wide. "Our banking history? That’s private!"

"Not when you’re using your daughter-in-law’s military medical trust fund to pay off your personal credit card debts," the lawyer revealed, sliding a spreadsheet across the table. "Every month for the past half-year, you’ve been transferring three thousand dollars out of the allowance the Colonel mailed to Emily, routing it into your shell company. That’s bank fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny. The state is already preparing a warrant for your arrest, Linda."

"No!" Linda gasped, clutching her chest, her face turning an ugly shade of gray. "That was for household expenses! Emily agreed to it!"

"Emily was kept under physical duress in a locked apartment," the lawyer countered, looking at Ryan with absolute disgust. "Your son is looking at a minimum of ten years for aggravated domestic battery on a pregnant victim, and you’re looking at five for financial exploitation. The Colonel isn't looking for a divorce settlement, folks. He’s looking for a federal conviction."

Just then, the door to the office opened, and two plainclothes state detectives stepped inside, accompanied by a military liaison officer.

"Ryan Miller? Linda Miller?" the detective asked, pulling two sets of steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for domestic battery, conspiracy, and corporate financial fraud. Stand up and put your hands behind your back."

Ryan fell out of his chair, weeping openly as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. He looked at his mother, but Linda was already hyperventilating, her carefully constructed mask of suburban perfection shattering into ugly, desperate pieces as she was led out of the building in front of a dozen reporters who had been tipped off by an anonymous source at the base.
