PART 4: Shadows and Alliances

I checked us into the most secure, five-star hotel in Guadalajara under an assumed name. I didn't care about the cost; my immediate priority was the safety and health of my family.
The first night was heartbreaking. Valeria refused to sleep on the plush king-sized bed, instinctively trying to curl up on the floor in the corner of the room with Mateo. It took hours of gentle holding, crying together, and reassuring her before she finally fell asleep in my arms.
The next morning, a private doctor I hired arrived at the suite. The diagnosis made my blood boil all over again. Valeria was severely malnourished, suffering from anemia and chronic psychological trauma. Mateo’s growth was stunted due to the lack of proper nutrients, though thankfully, the doctor assured me that with immediate medical care and a specialized diet, he would recover fully.
While they rested, I sat on the balcony with my laptop and a burner phone. I needed an ally—someone who knew the law, but more importantly, someone who knew how to destroy a thief legally and financially.
I called Alejandro, my childhood best friend who was now one of the top criminal defense and asset recovery attorneys in Mexico.
Two hours later, Alejandro arrived at the hotel suite. When I told him the entire story and showed him the medical reports of Valeria and Mateo, his jaw tightened, and his knuckles turned white.
"This is worse than standard fraud, Gabriel," Alejandro said, reviewing the financial receipts I had kept meticulously from my time at sea. "This is human trafficking, forced labor, forgery, and embezzlement. He essentially held your family hostage while stealing your life savings."
"Can we get the house back?" I asked, my voice cold.
"We can get much more than just the house," Alejandro replied, opening a legal database on his tablet. "I did a quick preliminary search on Roberto's assets. The luxury house in Zapopan is registered under his name, yes. But here's the catch: Roberto used your Power of Attorney—which you signed over to him for 'emergencies' before you left—to sign the deeds. He forged your signature on several waivers stating that the money was a 'gift' to him."
"Can he get away with that?"
"Not a chance," Alejandro smiled darkly. "Because he was sloppy. He didn't realize that international maritime banks keep ironclad digital footprints of every transfer, including the specific stipulations you attached to the monthly funds. Furthermore, I have a contact in the financial intelligence unit. Roberto has been using your money to fund a luxury car rental business, but he's deeply in debt to local private lenders to maintain his lavish lifestyle."
Alejandro looked me dead in the eye. "If we hit him legally, he will try to liquidate the assets and run. We need to freeze everything before he realizes what's happening. And we need to find the forged documents he used to deceive Valeria."

"Tell me what to do," I said.
"We play along for forty-eight hours," Alejandro instructed. "Let him think you're just angry and planning a standard lawsuit. While he prepares for a basic defense, we slice his throat financially."
