Chapter 8: The Man in the Darkness

Chapter 8: The Man in the Darkness

For one long, breathless moment, no one moved.

The emergency lights painted the conference room in a dim red glow, turning familiar faces into shadows.

Lily clung tightly to Daniel's hand.

Vanessa wrapped an arm around her daughter, her heart pounding so loudly she was certain everyone could hear it.

The slow footsteps continued.

One...

Then another.

Detective Samuel Brooks quietly reached for the flashlight clipped to his belt.

With his other hand, he signaled the officers to remain still.

"Police," he called into the darkness.

"If someone is there, identify yourself."

The footsteps stopped.

Silence answered.

Daniel instinctively stepped in front of Lily and Vanessa.

Henry picked up the heavy wooden chair beside him, prepared to defend his family if necessary.

Margaret stared toward the hallway with unmistakable fear.

She whispered,

"It's him."

Brooks turned toward her.

"Richard Holloway?"

She nodded.

"I've heard those footsteps before."

Another few seconds passed.

Then—

the emergency generator finally activated.

Lights flickered once.

Twice.

Then the conference room returned to full brightness.

Everyone blinked.

The hallway outside was empty.

No one stood there.

The footsteps had vanished.

One of the officers hurried back into the room.

"Detective!"

Brooks looked up.

"We searched both hallways."

"And?"

"No one."

Daniel frowned.

"That's impossible."

The officer nodded.

"The only exterior door nearby was locked from the inside."

Henry slowly lowered the chair.

"So whoever it was..."

"...knew another way out."

Brooks immediately ordered the estate placed under a complete search.

Within minutes, officers checked every hallway, every office, every storage room, and every staircase.

Nothing.

No intruder.

No signs of forced entry.

No fingerprints.

No witnesses.

Only one discovery.

A small white envelope had been left on the conference table.

No one had noticed it arrive.

Brooks carefully put on gloves before picking it up.

Across the front, written in elegant black handwriting, were four words.

Stop Looking. Last Warning.

The room fell silent.

Inside the envelope was a single photograph.

It showed Daniel.

Taken only minutes earlier.

He was standing beside Lily near the ballroom window, gently holding her hand.

The picture had clearly been taken that afternoon.

Someone had been watching them.

Very closely.

Vanessa felt a chill run through her body.

"Someone was inside the estate."

Brooks nodded.

"And close enough to photograph all of you."

Henry looked around the room.

"They're trying to frighten us."

Margaret quietly corrected him.

"No."

"They're reminding us."

Daniel looked at her.

"Reminding us of what?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"That Richard always watches."

Before anyone could respond, another officer entered carrying a laptop.

"We've recovered security footage."

Brooks motioned for him to play it.

The screen displayed a hallway camera overlooking the conference room.

At 6:14 p.m., the lights suddenly failed.

The recording switched to infrared mode.

Everyone leaned closer.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a man wearing a dark overcoat appeared from the far end of the hallway.

His face remained hidden beneath a hat.

He walked calmly toward the conference room.

Never hurrying.

Never looking around.

As if he already knew exactly where every camera was located.

He paused outside the conference room door.

Reached into his coat.

Placed the white envelope on a nearby table.

Then looked directly toward the security camera.

Slowly...

He smiled.

Even though his face remained partly hidden, the smile alone was unsettling.

He lifted one finger.

Not in greeting.

In warning.

Then he walked away.

Seconds later, the recording glitched.

The screen filled with static.

When the image returned...

The hallway was empty.

Brooks replayed the footage three times.

"He knew exactly when the cameras would fail."

Daniel folded his arms.

"This wasn't random."

"No."

Brooks agreed.

"It was planned."

Henry stared at the frozen image.

"I've seen that coat before."

Everyone looked toward him.

"Where?"

Henry closed his eyes, searching his memory.

"The funeral."

"Michael's funeral."

Vanessa looked up sharply.

"There was a man standing under an umbrella."

Henry nodded slowly.

"He never approached the family."

"He never spoke."

"He simply watched."

Margaret whispered,

"Richard."

Brooks turned back to her.

"You've never actually confirmed that."

Margaret shook her head.

"I didn't have to."

"How can you be certain?"

"Because he smiled exactly like that."

The detective wrote several notes.

"If Richard Holloway is involved, we'll locate him."

Margaret gave him a sad smile.

"Many people have tried."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

His own image stared back at him, Lily's tiny hand resting safely inside his.

The message was unmistakable.

Someone knew he had become involved.

Someone wanted him to walk away.

Instead, the warning strengthened his resolve.

He carefully folded the photograph and placed it in his jacket pocket.

"I'm not leaving."

Vanessa looked at him.

"You still want to help us?"

Daniel answered honestly.

"I don't know what our future looks like."

His eyes met hers.

"Our wedding is gone."

"Our relationship..."

He paused.

"I don't know."

Vanessa lowered her head.

"I understand."

Daniel then looked toward Lily.

"But none of this is her fault."

Lily quietly walked over to him.

She looked up with uncertain eyes.

"Mr. Daniel?"

"Yes?"

"Bad people don't like the truth?"

He smiled gently.

"Usually they don't."

"Why?"

"Because the truth takes away the power of their lies."

She thought about that for a moment.

Then she reached into the pocket of her little princess dress.

"I forgot."

She pulled out a tiny folded piece of paper.

"My daddy gave this to Mommy."

Vanessa frowned.

"I've never seen that."

"I found it inside Bunny."

She held up her stuffed rabbit.

"The stuffing came out last week."

Everyone stared.

Brooks carefully accepted the folded paper.

It was no larger than a business card.

Inside was a short handwritten message.

If you're reading this, they found the briefcase.

Beneath the sentence was a simple drawing.

Not a map.

Not an address.

Just the outline of an old lighthouse beside the sea.

Henry immediately stood.

"I know that place."

Brooks looked at him.

"Where is it?"

"It's the abandoned Harbor Point Lighthouse."

Henry's voice grew tense.

"Michael rented a storage room beneath it."

Daniel frowned.

"You've never mentioned this before."

"I didn't remember."

Henry looked closely at the sketch.

"He only took me there once."

"Years ago."

Brooks folded the note carefully.

"If Michael left something there..."

"It may be the evidence he never carried with him."

Margaret suddenly stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

"No."

Everyone turned toward her.

"You can't go there."

Brooks narrowed his eyes.

"Why not?"

Margaret's face turned pale.

"Because if Richard believes you've discovered the lighthouse..."

She struggled to finish the sentence.

"...he'll already be waiting."

Outside, another rumble of thunder rolled across the evening sky.

Daniel looked through the rain-speckled window toward the distant coastline, invisible beyond the darkness.

Somewhere beyond those clouds stood an abandoned lighthouse.

And if Michael Carter had planned as carefully as it now seemed...

May you like

The greatest secret he had ever uncovered had not been inside the briefcase.

It had been waiting all these years for someone brave enough to follow the final clue.
