Chapter 7: The Shadow Behind the Collins Family

Chapter 7: The Shadow Behind the Collins Family
The ballroom had almost emptied by sunset.
Most of the wedding guests had gone home with more questions than answers. The flowers still lined the aisle, the candles still burned softly, and the untouched wedding cake stood as a reminder of a celebration that never happened.
Outside, television news vans had gathered near the entrance to Willow Creek Estate.
Reporters spoke excitedly into their cameras.
"A wedding canceled by a family secret..."
"...new evidence in a six-year-old death investigation..."
The story was already spreading.
Inside one of the estate's private conference rooms, Detective Samuel Brooks assembled everyone who remained.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
Lily.
Henry.
Margaret.
Two detectives stood near the door while another officer organized the evidence collected from Michael Carter's briefcase.
Brooks looked around the room.
"I need everyone to understand something."
His tone was calm but firm.
"What we discovered today may involve far more than one family."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
Brooks placed Michael's notebook on the table.
"We've identified several names listed in these records."
He opened the notebook to the page marked with colored tabs.
"Three people are deceased."
Henry looked surprised.
"Already?"
Brooks nodded.
"All within the last five years."
"Accidents?"
Daniel asked.
The detective didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he said,
"Officially."
The room fell silent.
Vanessa slowly wrapped an arm around Lily, who had fallen asleep across two chairs, still holding her stuffed rabbit.
She looked so peaceful that it was hard to believe her life had changed forever in a single afternoon.
Henry broke the silence.
"Michael told me he wasn't chasing a simple fraud case."
"What was he chasing?" Daniel asked.
Henry looked toward the window.
"He believed someone had built an entire network."
"A network?"
"Business owners."
"Lawyers."
"Politicians."
"People who protected one another."
Detective Brooks nodded.
"That matches what we've found so far."
Margaret remained unusually quiet.
Daniel noticed.
Throughout the day, she had argued, interrupted, and denied.
Now...
She simply listened.
As if she already knew where the conversation was headed.
Brooks closed the notebook.
"Mrs. Collins."
She looked up slowly.
"I'd like to ask you something."
She folded her hands.
"Go ahead."
"When Michael confronted you six years ago..."
"...who were you protecting?"
Margaret closed her eyes.
For nearly a minute, no one spoke.
Finally, she whispered,
"My husband."
Vanessa stared.
"Dad?"
Margaret nodded.
"Your father wasn't just chairman of the Collins Foundation."
She swallowed hard.
"He was one of the men moving the money."
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"No."
"He would never—"
"He did."
Margaret's voice cracked.
"I found out too late."
Henry lowered his head.
"I warned you."
"You did."
"But I loved him."
The confession seemed to drain every ounce of strength from her body.
"I convinced myself there had to be another explanation."
Daniel asked quietly,
"And when Michael discovered the truth?"
Margaret looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"I begged him to stop."
"Because you thought your husband was guilty?"
She nodded.
"I believed if the investigation continued..."
"...our family would be destroyed."
Henry sighed.
"So you chose silence."
Margaret whispered,
"Yes."
Detective Brooks asked the question everyone feared.
"Did your husband kill Michael?"
Margaret looked horrified.
"No."
"I swear he didn't."
"Then who did?"
"I don't know."
Her answer sounded genuine.
Daniel believed she was hiding many things.
But perhaps not that.
An officer suddenly entered the room carrying a cardboard archive box.
"Detective."
Brooks looked up.
"What is it?"
"We searched Mr. Collins' former office."
The officer placed the box on the table.
"This was hidden behind a false wall in his filing cabinet."
Henry frowned.
"A false wall?"
The officer nodded.
"It appears someone wanted these files forgotten."
Brooks carefully opened the box.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Most contained financial statements.
Others contained photographs.
One large envelope caught his attention.
Across the front was written:
PRIVATE – DO NOT DESTROY
Brooks removed several photographs.
The first showed a fundraising gala from nearly seven years earlier.
Business leaders smiled beside politicians.
Nothing unusual.
The second photograph stopped everyone.
Michael Carter stood in the background.
He wasn't posing.
He was taking pictures.
Hidden behind a decorative pillar, he had photographed two men exchanging a thick envelope.
Brooks turned the picture over.
On the back, Michael had written:
Follow the man on the left. He answers to someone else.
Daniel examined the image.
The man on the left wasn't Vanessa's father.
It wasn't Henry.
It wasn't anyone Daniel recognized.
"Who is he?"
Margaret leaned forward.
The moment she saw the photograph, she gasped.
"Oh no..."
Vanessa looked at her.
"You know him?"
Margaret nodded slowly.
"His name is Richard Holloway."
Henry's expression darkened immediately.
"I hoped I'd never hear that name again."
Daniel frowned.
"Who is Richard Holloway?"
Henry answered quietly.
"He financed the Collins Foundation."
Brooks added,
"And according to our records..."
"...he also financed three other charities now under federal investigation."
Daniel felt the pieces beginning to shift.
"So Michael wasn't investigating only the Collins family."
"No."
Brooks tapped the photograph.
"He was following the money."
Vanessa looked at the picture again.
"I've met Richard."
"When?"
"He came to our house several times."
Henry nodded sadly.
"So did I."
Daniel noticed something odd.
Every time Richard's name was mentioned...
Margaret became more frightened.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
As though she believed Richard was still watching.
Before Daniel could ask another question, Margaret quietly said,
"He's going to know."
Brooks looked at her.
"Know what?"
"That you've opened Michael's files."
Daniel frowned.
"How?"
Margaret looked around the room.
"Because Richard always knew everything."
The conference room suddenly felt much colder.
An officer's radio crackled.
"Detective Brooks."
A voice came through.
"We've got a situation."
Brooks answered immediately.
"Go ahead."
"Security footage shows an unidentified man entered the estate parking lot about twenty minutes ago."
"Did he leave?"
"No."
"Where is he now?"
Another pause.
"We don't know."
Every detective in the room immediately became alert.
Brooks stood.
"Lock every entrance."
The officers hurried outside.
Daniel instinctively moved closer to Lily and Vanessa.
Henry slowly rose from his chair.
Margaret whispered something under her breath.
Daniel caught only three words.
"It's too late."
Then—
the lights throughout the conference room flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And suddenly...
The entire estate went dark.
Only emergency exit signs cast a faint red glow across the room.
Somewhere in the darkness...
A door slowly creaked open.
Then came the unmistakable sound of slow, deliberate footsteps.
Not running.
Not hiding.
Walking.
As though whoever had entered wanted them to know they were no longer alone.
Lily woke with a frightened gasp.
She reached blindly through the darkness until she found Daniel's hand.
He held it firmly.
"You'll be okay," he whispered.
But as the footsteps came closer...
May you like
Daniel wasn't sure whether he was reassuring Lily—
or trying to convince himself.
