Chapter 5 - The Gala of Shadows

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a glittering sea of black tuxedos, silk evening gowns, and towering floral arrangements. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over Chicago’s political elite, corporate titans, and highest-ranking socialites.
At the center of it all stood Dante Moretti.
He looked sharp in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, but those who knew him closely could see the cracks beneath the surface. His eyes darted nervously toward the entrance every time the doors opened. His empire was bleeding liquid cash, his captains were refusing his phone calls, and his home was a quiet, empty wasteland.
Beside him stood Selena, wearing a shimmering gold gown covered in sequins. She was trying desperately to smile for the society photographers, but the icy stares from the other high-society women in the room made her feel like an intruder.
"Dante," Selena whispered, clutching his arm tightly. "People are staring at us. Why is no one coming over to talk to you?"
"Shut up and smile," Dante hissed through his teeth. "The Mayor is arriving in ten minutes. Once he shakes my hand in front of these cameras, the captains will fall back in line."
Suddenly, the music from the live orchestra faltered.
A collective hush washed over the three hundred guests in the ballroom. People began turning toward the grand staircase at the entrance of the room, whispering furiously behind their champagne flutes.
Dante turned around, his heart slamming into his ribs.
Descending the marble staircase was Amara.
She was breathtaking. She wore a floor-length, custom midnight-blue velvet gown that accentuated her full pregnancy with absolute, majestic grace. Her dark hair fell in soft, elegant waves over her shoulders, and around her neck sat the famous Moretti Sapphire—a legendary seventy-carat necklace that old man Oldo had personally willed to her, worth over twelve million dollars.
Walking beside her, offering his arm with quiet dignity, was Frank Rossi, the most senior captain of the Moretti syndicate. Behind them walked four other senior captains, all dressed in formal attire, acting as her personal security detail.
Selena gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "How... how did she get the sapphire? That was in the family vault!"
"The family vault requires biometric clearance," Dante muttered, his voice barely a breath. "Her fingerprint."
Amara reached the floor of the ballroom. Guests immediately parted like the Red Sea, bowing their heads slightly as she passed. She didn't look like a abandoned wife fleeing a marriage—she looked like an reigning queen inspecting her domain.
Dante stepped forward, his fists clenched at his sides, blocking her path in the middle of the dance floor.
"Amara," Dante rasped, his eyes burning with a mix of fury, desperation, and an agonizing surge of unwanted desire. "What is the meaning of this? Why are my captains walking with you?"
Amara stopped two feet away from him. She looked at him with complete, unbothered tranquility.
"Good evening, Dante," she said softly. "It's a lovely event. You always did know how to order the flowers."
"You took the sapphire," Dante sneered, leaning closer to her. "You took my money. You turned my men against me. Do you really think you can humiliate me in front of the entire city and walk out of here alive?"
"I didn't turn your men against you, Dante," Amara replied, her voice carrying clearly enough for the surrounding elite to hear. "You did that yourself when you proved you couldn't be trusted to protect your own household. A man who betrays his wife will eventually betray his brothers."
Frank Rossi stepped forward, leaning into Dante’s face. "Watch your tone with the head of the Moretti Trust, Dante. You're speaking to the boss."
"I AM THE BOSS!" Dante bellowed, his composure completely shattering as he slammed his hand against a nearby cocktail table, sending champagne glasses shattering onto the marble floor.
Selena shrank back in terror as guests gasped, pulling out their phones to record the meltdown.
Before Dante could step toward Amara again, the heavy double doors of the ballroom were thrown open.
Dozens of armed Federal Agents in dark blue vests flooded into the room, led by Federal Prosecutor Marcus Kane.
"Dante Moretti!" Kane’s voice echoed over the loudspeaker. "Stay where you are! Put your hands on your head!"
Panic erupted in the ballroom as guests scrambled toward the exits. Dante froze, his eyes wide as agents surrounded him from every angle, their weapons raised.
"What is this?!" Dante yelled, looking around frantically. "I have immunity! My lawyers—"
"Your lawyer is standing right over there," Kane said, pointing toward Julian Vance, who was calmly sipping champagne beside Amara. "And your immunity was revoked twenty minutes ago when the federal grand jury returned a twelve-count indictment for RICO violations, wire fraud, and illegal arms trafficking."
An agent stepped behind Dante, kicking his legs apart and pulling his arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Dante didn't look at the agents. He didn't look at the cameras flashing in his face.
He looked at Amara.
She stood quietly two feet away, her hand resting gracefully on her pregnant belly, watching him with cold, beautiful detachment.
"You did this," Dante whispered, a tear of pure rage escaping his eye. "You destroyed me."
May you like
Amara stepped half an inch closer, leaning down as he was forced to his knees by the federal agents.
"You told me to accept her or leave, Dante," Amara whispered into his ear. "I just decided to leave you with nothing."
