Chapter 10 - The True Kingdom

Later that night, after the guests had departed and Victoria was fast asleep in her sunlit nursery, Amara sat on the quiet balcony of her master suite.
The cool night air washed over her, bringing the soothing scent of pine trees and Lake Michigan. In her lap sat a small leather-bound journal—the same journal she had used to record her initial survival plan three years ago.
She turned to the very first page, where she had written a single line on that dark, rainy Sunday afternoon when Dante had given her his cruel ultimatum:
'Accept her or leave.'
Amara took a pen from the side table and drew a single, clean line through those words.
Beneath it, she wrote a new entry:
'I left. And I built a kingdom where loyalty isn't demanded through fear—it is earned through respect.'
A soft knock came at her bedroom door, and Julian stepped out onto the balcony carrying two warm mugs of tea. He wrapped a cozy cashmere blanket around her shoulders before sitting in the chair beside her.
"Victoria is completely out," Julian said with a soft smile. "She spent twenty minutes trying to convince me that her stuffed bear needed to join the board of directors."
Amara laughed—a bright, beautiful sound that resonated through the quiet night air. "She definitely has her grandfather's corporate ambition."
"And her mother's brilliant mind," Julian added softly.
He reached across the small table between them, taking her hand into his own. His fingers were warm, steady, and strong.
"Amara," Julian said, looking directly into her eyes with absolute clarity and devotion. "For the last three years, I’ve had the privilege of watching you rebuild your life from the ashes. I’ve watched you protect your child, transform a crooked family into a force for good, and stand tall when lesser people would have broken."
He slipped down onto one knee beside her chair, pulling a small black velvet box from his jacket pocket.
Inside sat a simple, breathtaking ring—a flawless canary yellow diamond set in refined platinum, symbolizing light, joy, and a brand new dawn.
"I don't offer you an empire, Amara," Julian said, his voice filled with deep emotion. "You already built one yourself. I don't ask you to step behind me or stay in the shadows. I ask to stand beside you as your partner, your protector, and your equal for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness filled Amara’s eyes.
She looked at the ring, then looked at the man who had stood by her through the darkest storm of her life—never demanding anything from her, never trying to control her, simply offering his quiet, unshakeable loyalty every step of the way.
"Yes, Julian," Amara whispered, her voice overflowing with emotion. "Yes. Absolutely yes."
Julian slipped the ring onto her finger, standing up to pull her into a deep, loving embrace. His arms wrapped around her safely, holding her close beneath the star-lit sky.
Far away in a concrete cell in southern Illinois, Dante Moretti sat alone in the dark, staring at a cold steel wall, haunted by the ghost of the life he had thrown away.
But here, on the shores of Lake Michigan, Amara Moretti stood in the warm light of a true love she had created with her own hands.
