Chapter 6 - The Verdict

The day of the final court hearing arrived. The courtroom was tense. Claire sat at the defense table, stripped of her designer clothes, wearing a plain gray suit. Her eyes were sunken, and her previous arrogance had turned into desperate panic.

I sat at the prosecution table, holding my head high in my dress uniform. Valerie and Mateo were safe at home with my mother, protected and far away from this toxic room.

The judge, a stern woman with a reputation for being fiercely protective of children, reviewed the evidence in silence for what felt like an eternity. She watched the security footage. She read the medical reports. She looked over the financial fraud documents.

When she finally looked up, her gaze cut through Claire like a laser.

"In my twenty-five years on the bench," the judge began, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls, "I have rarely seen such a calculated, heartless display of maternal neglect and cruelty. Mrs. Vance, you did not merely suffer a lapse in judgment. You abandoned your vulnerable children, abused your daughter, and treated your family as a financial hostage."

The judge slammed her gavel down with a resounding crack.

"This court hereby denies the defendant’s motion for custody, visitation, or spousal support. Full physical and legal custody of Valerie and Mateo Vance is awarded solely to their father, Mark Vance. Furthermore, due to the severe nature of the financial crimes and child abuse evidence, the defendant’s bail is revoked. She will remain in custody pending her criminal trial."

Claire burst into hysterical tears as the bailiffs approached her, ratcheting handcuffs onto her wrists once again. She screamed my name, begging for mercy, but I didn't look back. I turned my back on her, walking out of the courtroom into the bright, clean sunlight.
