Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

Claire jumped, her phone slipping from her hand and clattering onto the hardwood floor. The color drained from her face instantly, but within seconds, her shock transformed into a mask of indignant anger.

"Mark! You're home early," she stammered, trying to smooth down her dress. "You scared me. And what do you mean she's not cleaning? This house is a disaster. I left her with simple chores—"

"Simple chores?" I walked toward her, each step heavy and deliberate. Rex walked out of the office behind me, his ears pinned back, his teeth faintly showing. Claire took a step back, her back hitting the front door. "You left a seven-year-old child alone for twenty hours to take care of a six-month-old infant. You locked the food, Claire. You bruised her arm."

"She's lying!" Claire shrieked, her voice turning high and defensive. "She’s a clumsy, dramatic child! She probably fell or made up some story to get you to come home because she didn't want to do her chores! I only went out for a few hours to clear my head. Being a mother is exhausting, Mark! You're always away at your stupid army training, leaving me all alone!"

"I have the footage, Claire."

Those five words silenced her instantly. Her eyes darted toward the hidden camera in the corner of the ceiling.

"I watched everything," I continued, the rage inside me burning hot and clean. "I watched you drag her. I watched you threaten her. I watched my daughter starve while you were at a luxury hotel downtown with my credit card."

"Mark, please, it's not what it looks like," she began to plead, her voice cracking as she realized the gravity of her situation. She tried to reach out and touch my chest, but I stepped back, disgusted. "I was stressed. I had a momentary lapse in judgment. You can't destroy our family over one mistake!"

"It’s not one mistake. It’s a crime," I said coldly. I pulled my phone from my pocket. "I’ve already called my captain, and I’ve already called the local police department. They are on their way."

Panic, pure and frantic, took over Claire’s face. "Are you insane?! You'll ruin my reputation! My family's name! If the police get involved, I could lose everything!"

"You already lost everything the moment you laid a hand on my daughter," I said.

Behind her, through the glass panels of the front door, blue and red lights began to flash against the evening sky. Sirens wailed in the distance, drawing closer. Claire looked at the lights, then at me, realizing that the life of luxury and privilege she had built on the backs of my children's suffering was officially over.
