Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Syndicate

The arrest of Ryan Fletcher at the regional elevator shaft was the final domino that triggered the complete collapse of the Chicago criminal syndicate. Faced with a potential fifty-year sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, Ryan’s high-priced corporate defense attorney realized the game was entirely over.
By Monday morning, Ryan had signed a comprehensive, non-negotiable plea agreement with the Department of Justice.
"He’s singing like a bird, Colonel," the federal prosecutor said, walking into the hospital conference room where Dad and I were reviewing the final asset restoration orders. "In exchange for a removal of the maximum-security designation, Ryan has provided the grand jury with the complete encryption keys for the six offshore shell companies. He’s also turned state’s evidence against the primary corporate backers who funded his real estate front."
Dad looked at the financial data appearing on the screen. The twenty million dollars that had been stolen from my mother’s inheritance trust had been successfully tracked, frozen, and re-routed back into a secure, protected educational trust under my sole legal name.
"And Linda?" I asked, my voice calm, the lingering fear completely gone, replaced by a quiet, solid sense of dignity.
"Linda Fletcher tried to fight the guards during her processing," the prosecutor replied with a grim smile. "She’s been slapped with three additional counts of assaulting a federal officer. Between the financial fraud and the conspiracy charges, she is looking at a minimum of fifteen years at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp. She won't be enjoying any luxury apartments for a very long time."
I leaned back in my chair, looking out the window at the sunny afternoon sky. The nightmare that had begun in that dark apartment seven months ago was finally drawing to a close. The justice wasn't just fast; it was absolute.
Dad walked over to me, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. "The legal team has finalized the divorce decree under emergency military protection statutes, Emmy. As of ten minutes ago, you are legally free. Your name is Emily Bennett again. And no one can ever take that from you."

I looked up into my father's eyes, seeing the silver eagle on his shoulders. "Thank you, Daddy. For everything."
"You did the hard work, Emmy," he said softly, his eyes shining with pride. "You stood up in that courtroom and spoke the truth. You’re the real soldier in this family."
