Chapter 5 - The Rat in the Corner

The fallout from the grand jury testimony was instantaneous and catastrophic for the defense. Within three hours of the adjournment, the jury returned a unanimous indictment on all counts, including federal wire fraud, money laundering, aggravated domestic assault, and witness intimidation. The judge revoked their bail immediately, ordering them remanded to a federal holding facility without bond.

However, the real drama was unfolding behind the scenes of Ryan’s failing real estate firm.

Inside the dark, empty office building on the outskirts of Chicago, Ryan’s corporate backers were realizing that the situation had become completely radioactive. The spotlight my father had brought down on the money-laundering operation was threatening to expose a multi-billion-dollar criminal syndicate spanning three states.

Ryan sat at his desk, the office dark, a single lamp illuminating a duffel bag filled with stacks of cash and three fake passports he had purchased from a black-market contact two days ago.

"We have to leave tonight, Mom," Ryan whispered into his phone, his voice shaking with a manic, terrified energy. "The federal agents are monitoring the airports, but I have a contact with a private charter flight out of a small regional airfield in Indiana. If we can cross the state line before midnight, we can catch the flight to Mexico."

"I’m already packed, Ryan," Linda’s voice came through the speaker, sounding entirely stripped of her usual aristocratic arrogance. "But what about the offshore accounts? The feds have frozen the primary trust assets. We only have the twenty million in the logistics reserve."

"Twenty million is enough to live like royalty in Cabo, Mom," Ryan hissed, slamming the duffel bag shut. "Just get to the car. I’m leaving the office now."

The Trap Snaps ShutRyan grabbed the duffel bag, turned off the lamp, and rushed toward the private executive elevator at the back of the suite. The doors slid open with a soft chime, and he stepped inside, pressing the button for the underground parking garage.

The elevator descended smoothly, but halfway down, the lights suddenly flickered and died. The car ground to a violent, mechanical halt between the fourth and third floors.

"What the...?" Ryan muttered, hitting the emergency call button. "Hello? The elevator is stuck! Get the maintenance crew down here!"

The speaker hummed to life, but it wasn't the building’s security guard who answered.

"Going somewhere, Ryan?"

The voice belonged to Master Sergeant Miller.

Suddenly, the escape hatch on the ceiling of the elevator car was ripped open with a horrific, metallic screech. The blinding beam of a tactical flashlight shined down into the dark car, illuminating Ryan’s terrified face.

Two federal agents in full tactical gear dropped down into the elevator, their weapons drawn and locked onto Ryan’s chest before he could even drop the duffel bag. Within seconds, he was pinned against the mirrored wall, the cold steel of real federal handcuffs clicking around his wrists with an absolute, permanent finality.

"Ryan Fletcher," the lead agent announced, pulling the fake passports from his jacket pocket. "You are under arrest for attempted flight to avoid prosecution and federal financial espionage. I suggest you get comfortable. You’re going to be spending a very, very long time in a place where your mother can't help you."
